In honor of classes starting this week, some of our recent alumni have advice for new and returning students!

"I was once in a situation where I almost walked away from education. There were moments when I questioned myself and wondered if maybe this wasn’t meant for me. But I’m so thankful I didn’t let that season define me, because now I’m going into my first year teaching, and I truly couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else.

Life is way too short to spend it living according to what other people think you should do. If education is what you’re passionate about, chase it. If you want to teach , then teach . If you want to coach, coach. If you have a dream, go after it.

There will be hard days. There will be days you feel overwhelmed and wonder if you’re good enough. But there will also be moments where you look around your classroom and realize, “This is exactly where I’m supposed to be.”

So my biggest advice is simple: don’t give up on yourself. Don’t let people put you down. Don’t lose your passion. And never be afraid to chase the life you’ve always dreamed of."

The interesting thing about education - you never have the same day twice. Students, backgrounds, circumstances, they're always different. So in order to really be effective, you have to be able to reflect on lessons and experiences, and use that judgment to make decisions.

The final component of our Teach like a PIONEER framework is R-Reflective: Candidates engage in continuous self-assessment and professional growth while collaborating, advocating, and leading within schools and communities.

We are evaluating our candidates throughout their time in our programs. We use the Arkansas Aspiring TESS rubric, which aligns to the Danielson framework; we use different PRAXIS tests as content metrics. There are dispositions assessments and field experiences woven throughout the program. They dissect HQIM, plan and adapt lessons and units, learn differentiation strategies. All to ensure that our candidates graduate as effective educators.

The next-to-last component is Effective - Educators plan and implement purposeful instruction aligned with content standards, pedagogy, and learner needs to maximize student success.

Student engagement seems to be at an all-time low. Keeping students engaged in the classroom requires a lot - so we train our students in ways to capture that engagement. But beyond engagement, students need to own their learning, so that they can be active participants with the teacher and know why what they're learning matters to them.

Our next component is E - Effective: Candidates use effective, research-based instructional strategies to actively engage students and empower them to take ownership of their learning.

If it hasn't been said before, a teacher is never "just" a teacher. We train our candidates to be a safe space for students. Every teacher has accidentally been called "mom" or "dad" before. Because they made students feel safe. There's a teacher you know with a snack drawer for hungry kids. A hygiene cabinet with deodorant and other hygiene supplies. They never ask - they just notice and make it happen. Because the reality is there will be many students who don't have that safe space when they leave school.

The next component of our framework is N - Nurturing. Candidates create safe, supportive, respectful, and active learning environments that value and foster a sense of belonging for all learners.
