On the final day of Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re highlighting ArtCenter alumni Roberto Rodriguez (BFA 20) and Patrick Martinez (BFA 05), whose work documents the histories, communities, and cultural landscapes of Los Angeles.

Rodriguez’s project, MOLA (Maria of Los Angeles), is an image-based publication dedicated to preserving murals of the Virgen de Guadalupe and sharing her history in Los Angeles, once known as Nuestra Señora Reina de Los Ángeles. Through the murals, the artists behind them, and the stories of the city’s immigrant communities, Rodriguez documents an essential part of L.A.

Also featured are works by Martinez, whose multidisciplinary practice reflects the visual language of Los Angeles to explore identity, history, social justice, and cultural memory. Through mixed-media paintings, neon signage, and text-based works, Martinez draws on the city’s everyday imagery and materials to examine economic divides and histories of loss. His neon pieces reimagine familiar storefront signs, transforming them with messages drawn from literature and public speech.

ArtCenter alum Jane Lu, a Designmatters fellow working with the Mayor’s Office of the City of Los Angeles, is helping explore that vision through civic branding and City Store concepts that reflect the city’s vibrant neighborhoods, diverse communities, and shared sense of pride.

At CicLAvia’s Little Tokyo hub, Jane brought the concept to the community through live screen printing, tote bag giveaways, and conversations with Angelenos to learn what they’d want from a future City Store.

The pilot was a success: all 200 screen-printed totes were given away, and 245 survey responses were collected. By bringing residents into the design process, the project is helping shape a City Store concept that feels distinctly L.A.

ArtCenter Film student Sager Al Nuaimi’s short film “DISSENT” will be featured in this season of , premiering Thursday, October 29, at 7 p.m. on PBS SoCal and the PBS app.

The film follows a priest, a rabbi, and an imam aboard a flight to a peace summit, where the three must put aside their differences to exorcise a possessed flight attendant.

For Sager, the project was an opportunity to take on new challenges, including stunts and extensive visual effects. “It was also an interesting and fun challenge due to its complex theme, mixed genre, and stylized setting,” he says.

Congratulations to Sager on having his work featured in this season of Fine Cut.

This season features a collection of short films from schools across Southern California, including, winners in the categories of Documentary, Narrative and Animation.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, ArtCenter celebrates the creative practices and perspectives of our Hispanic and Latino community through the work of two recent alumni.

Pablo Banuelos (BFA 25), Film
Banuelos brings a distinct visual language to commercial filmmaking, with work including Jarritos “Fruit Punch”, which was shortlisted for the AICP Awards, and a commercial for Converse, as part of their Love Campaign.

Ximena Amaya (BFA 22), Graphic Design
Amaya’s practice explores typography, cultural identity, and visual communication.

Her featured projects include Mujeres Hispanas y Tipografía and Primarium: A Case for Cursive. She currently serves as Senior Designer, Graphics and Exhibitions at ArtCenter’s HMCT.

My Eyes Are My Lens brings together the work of ArtCenter’s Film faculty, tracing the expansive visual practices that have shaped the department since its founding in 1973.

Moving between cinema, photography, television, documentary, and commercial image-making, the exhibition reflects the breadth of practices cultivated within ArtCenter Film.

Featured artists include Matthew Rolston, Ken Aguado, Matia Karrell, Joy Kecken, Joe Petricca, Shannon Bennett, Emmett Sutherland, Stephen Berkman (BFA 88), Zack Snyder (BFA 89), and David Bouza.

Now on view at The MDP Gallery, South Campus, through October 16, 2026.

ArtCenter welcomes the community back to Pasadena ArtNight this fall, with exhibitions, demos, and live performances across our South Campus and Hillside Campus. Join us on Friday, October 9, from 6 - 10 pm.

At the HMCT Gallery, explore "Posters Seen Through Color", a selection of archival gems curated through the lens of color, accompanied by live harp compositions from Leng Bian.

The Peter and Merle Mullin Gallery in 1111 presents Torolab’s "CoNEJO NEGRO: Tortilleria and Print Shop", examining life across the political and physical boundaries of the U.S./Mexico border.

At the Williamson Gallery on Hillside Campus, discover ArtCenter’s Student Gallery, award-winning themed entertainment projects and live character modeling demonstrations with special effects expert Greg Smith and his students.
