Sometimes, the typeface is a statement in itself.

It can be tailor-made for a specific use case when nothing out there quite fits the bill, designed to express an emotion, or simply made to flaunt on your off-white business cards.

Being part of Monterey Car Week has been an ArtCenter tradition since 2002. Here are a few highlights from this year.

To start, ArtCenter students put their sketching skills to work at The Quail and Exotics on Broadway. Stop by next year to get your own sketch—because you never know if one of them might end up designing your dream car someday.

That’s exactly what happened for alum Jackie Han (BS 2021 Transportation Design). His Aston Martin capstone project, completed as an ArtCenter student, helped him land a job at the iconic automaker, where he went on to design the Aston Martin Valour and Valiant.

Jackie is now working on something just as exciting. Perhaps we’ll see another one of his designs at The Quail in the near future.

At The Quail, alum Delaney Barr (BS 2025 Transportation Design) unveiled her official artwork for the event. Students also selected the custom-coachwork 1966 Citroën DS Chapron 2 Cabriolet, owned by John Billings of California, for the ArtCenter Design Excellence Award.

Last but not least, the Design Excellence Award at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance was presented to a 1974 Lancia Stratos HF Stradale Coupé, owned by David and Erin Eichenbaum of St. Petersburg, Florida.

Another memorable Monterey Car Week in the books.

A new record was set when a 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe crossed the Gooding Christie's auction block at Pebble Beach Auctions last week. With the final bid reaching nearly $43 million, it became THE most valuable American car ever sold at auction.

Owned by Carroll Shelby himself, the one-of-six sloped design came from a young designer who convinced Shelby that aerodynamics could drastically increase the original Cobra’s speed. Despite skepticism, the concept came to life in under 90 days and ended up exceeding the Roadster’s top speed by 25 miles per hour.

This particular example, chassis CSX2300, collected medals at some of the most iconic races. And the young designer who created this motorsports masterpiece was ArtCenter alum Peter Brock (BS 56).

For ArtCenter alum Delaney Barr (BS 25 Transportation Design), the road to Monterey began long before arriving at The Quail by The Peninsula, A Motorsports Gathering.

Selected to create the official poster for The Quail during this year’s Monterey Car Week, Delaney drew inspiration from Bruce Meyer’s vehicle collection and the spirit of Route 66.

“I wanted the poster to feel less like a traditional concours illustration and more like a celebration of the journey,” Delaney shares. “Rather than focusing on a single vehicle, the piece is about the excitement, camaraderie, and pilgrimage that make Monterey Car Week—and especially The Quail—such a special experience.”

Everyone's talking about The Odyssey. We're throwing it back to 300.

Pictured on set are ArtCenter alumni Zack Snyder (BFA 89) and Larry Fong (BFA 89), the director/cinematographer duo behind the visually groundbreaking epic that brought Frank Miller's graphic novel of the Battle of Thermopylae to the big screen in 2007.

Fine Art instructor and ArtCenter alum (BFA 08) encourages students to always stay curious and to trust their own artistic voice.

She also asks them to be as honest and vulnerable as possible in their work.

“That’s what’s going to connect with people,” says Kusama. “That’s what’s really going to make you stand out.”
