We are deeply saddened by the passing of Grandmaster Navigator Sesario Sewralur who carried the legacy of his father, the legendary Mau Piailug, who was also an East-West Center (EWC) fellow.

As an EWC fellow in the 1970s, Mau partnered with members of the Polynesian Voyaging Society to share his knowledge that was almost lost to history - traditional navigation across vast ocean distances which relied on stars, ocean currents, cloud patterns, and other natural indicators without the use electronic instruments. In May 1976 the Hōkūle‘a set sail on its maiden voyage, traveling from Hawai‘i to Tahiti with Mau as navigator.

As a teen, Sesario joined the Hōkūleʻa on the Voyage of Rediscovery from 1985 to 1987.

The teachings of Mau and Sesario live on through the Traditional Non-Instrumental Navigation program at Palau Community College and the Hōkūleʻa, currently celebrating its 50th anniversary with the Moananuiākea, A Voyage for Earth, 2023 to 2027.
