Brother Dr. George Neely, Jr.

It is with profound sorrow that the Tau Omicron Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. announces the transition to Omega Chapter of our oldest active member, Brother Dr. George Neely, Jr., who entered Omega Chapter on August 29, 2026, at the age of 94.
Born on September 9, 1931, Brother Neely was initiated into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. in 1956 through the Delta Theta Chapter on the campus of Texas Southern University. For 70 years, he remained steadfast in the bond, exemplifying the Fraternity’s ideals of scholarship, leadership, service, and brotherhood.
A lifelong educator, scholar, and academic leader, Dr. Neely dedicated his professional life to advancing higher education and developing generations of students. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas Southern University and later earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Michigan.
Dr. Neely enjoyed a distinguished career at Fisk University, where he served as a Professor of Physics and later provided senior academic leadership as Executive Vice President and Provost. Through his work in the classroom and university administration, he helped shape the academic life of one of the nation’s historic institutions of higher learning while mentoring and influencing generations of students, faculty members, and educational leaders.
Brother Neely’s legacy within Tau Omicron Lambda Chapter is also deeply personal. He was the great-uncle of Tau Omicron Lambda Chapter President, Brother Dr. Brian K. Roberson II, representing a remarkable familial connection of scholarship, educational leadership, service, and devotion to Alpha Phi Alpha across generations.
For more than nine decades, Brother Neely lived a life marked by intellectual excellence, faithful service, and an enduring commitment to uplifting others. His remarkable 70 years in Alpha represent a legacy few have achieved and one that will forever remain a treasured part of the history of Tau Omicron Lambda Chapter.
As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life exceedingly well lived and a Brother who remained steadfast in the bond until the end.

The Tau Omicron Lambda Chapter extends its deepest condolences and prayers to the Neely family, Chapter President Dr. Brian K. Roberson II and his family, his loved ones, former students, colleagues, the Texas Southern University and Fisk University communities, and all whose lives were enriched by his extraordinary journey.
