Southeast American Indian Studies at UNC Pembroke SAIS is committed to becoming the premier teaching and research center for the study of Indians in the Southeastern United States.

Southeast American Indian Studies (SAIS) at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP) is committed to becoming the premier teaching and research center for the study of Indians in the Southeastern United States. Leveraging existing and future resources, SAIS will capitalize on the university’s unique history and its position as the leading institution of higher education for Indians of t

he eastern United States. SAIS will attract and link researchers and American Indian communities to the faculty, resources and programs of UNCP as well as to other researchers and programs. SAIS will work to establish a consortium of American Indian related programs at other academic institutions, both within the UNC system and across the Southeast. SAIS will also serve as a clearinghouse where community members, students, faculty, researchers and others can learn about American Indian related projects and programming at UNCP and the Southeast region. Most importantly, SAIS research will support the selfdetermination, self-sufficiency and sovereignty of the Indigenous nations of the Southeastern United States.
