We're celebrating alumna Robyn McNeil for "going the extra yard" at Conway Middle School!

Ms. McNeil (M.A. in English Education, '20) is a sixth-grade teacher and reading interventionist for the seventh and eighth grades. She received recognition in the Myrtle Beach Bowl, honoring outstanding educators in Horry County, South Carolina -- part of the College Football Playoff Foundation's "Extra Yard for Teachers" program.

"You will be happy to know that I draw from my thesis when I teach my students particular units or texts," she told us. Her thesis adviser was Dr. Michele Fazio of the Department of English, Theatre, and World Languages.

Ms. McNeil (pictured below, center) contacted Dr. Fazio right away upon learning of her award, which comes with $1,000 for classroom expenses, on-field recognition during the Myrtle Beach Bowl Game on Dec. 21, and a gift bag with local swag. "I told myself that, if I ever had the honor of reaching a teaching milestone, I would contact you as soon as possible to let you know what difference you make in the lives of your students."

Kudos to both of these educators!

Our second annual SAMI Expo on Wednesday showed where research meets innovation. The Southeastern Additive Manufacturing Initiative brings together industry and academia to showcase what companies are doing with additive manufacturing in their operations (think 3D printing but not only that) and to get students in conversations for future internships and employment.

"Yesterday was such an energizing day, bringing together so many constituents of our university and community partners around the possibilities of additive manufacturing," said Dr. Shreerekha Pillai, Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. "The keynote speaker [Dan Hamilton from the Pilkington glass factory in Laurinburg] was truly brilliant and inspiring, and the panel moderated by Dr. Steven Singletary was equally strong."

As organizer, Dr. Singletary, from the Department of Chemistry and Physics, gave credit to teamwork across campus for taking care of the event logistics. "The majority of the credit goes to Megan Pittman, Megan Strickland and Beth Wilkerson of the Thomas Entrepreneurship Hub, a co-sponsor of SAMI," he said.

It was a full house in Room 237 in the Dial Building on Wednesday as students heard the details of the spring break trip to Spain led by faculty in the Department of English, Theatre, and World Languages. Thanks to Milagros Lopez Fred and Dr. Natalie Love for putting this itinerary together!

Surely we want more history, not less!

We're partnering with the Scotland County Memorial Library (312 W Church St, Laurinburg) to offer a hands-on exploration of Southeastern Native art and culture this Saturday, September 26, from 10 am-1 pm. If you're in or near Laurinburg this weekend, stop by! Many thanks to the Museum of the Southeast American Indian for their guidance and support with this program, which is part of the We Want More History initiative led by the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, and the American Library Association. The Student Advisory Council in the College of Arts and Sciences met for the first time this week, for a friendly lunch to introduce themselves and to accept their charge for monthly meetings with Dean Shreerekha Pillai. Many disciplines, experiences, and paths to UNCP are represented!
