National Recognition for UWF Geography!

We’re proud to share that the Mu Pi Chapter of Gamma Theta Upsilon at the University of West Florida has been named a GTU Honors Chapter—one of only 8 chapters nationwide to receive this distinction out of more than 110 active chapters.

This achievement reflects the dedication of our students and the outstanding mentorship of Jason Ortegren, whose leadership helped guide the chapter to this prestigious national honor.

Congratulations to the Mu Pi Chapter and thank you, Dr. Ortegren, for your continued commitment to geography education and student success! 🌍👏

UWF Alum, Keith Johnson, led a half day workshop on Wetland Delineations. Keith was part of the UWF team that created Wetland Sciences, Inc over 20 years ago and is now a partner and is running one of the most sought after environmental/wetland consulting companies in the region. Students spent about one hour in the classroom learning background and process information. The remainder of the workshop was held in the field, in the UWF Conservation Forest Living Lab. Spots for the workshop were competitive due to a high interest. Plans to continue this type of professional development opportunities for our students are in the works. If you are interested in leading one, let's chat!

We are thrilled to share highlights from a very successful SEDAAG conference in Greenville, SC, this past weekend!

We had a strong presence at the conference, with three students and one faculty member giving oral presentations and six student poster presentations. All of the presentations were exceptionally well-received, drawing praise and congratulations from the audience—a testament to the quality of work our department produces.

This year, we were also fortunate to connect with several alumni—Jordan Fazio, Cooper Corey, Gabe Small, Pete Tereszkiewicz, Nelson Kowu—and Klaus during our alumni lunch. It was a pleasure to hear about their ongoing successes and catch up on their journeys since leaving UWF.

We are particularly proud to share that two of our recent alumni were recognized for their outstanding work:

Cooper Corey (former undergrad, graduated 2020) received the Ph.D. Student Oral Presentation Award.

Gabe Small (former undergrad, graduated 2023) earned the Master’s Student Poster Award.

Their achievements highlight their talent and the incredible mentoring and support our faculty provide to our students. This is yet another reminder of the lasting impact of our faculty's dedication to our students and program.
