The Office of Undergraduate Research hosted its annual Distinguished Undergraduate Researcher Award Ceremony, highlighting outstanding students and projects from across the university.

Within CASSH, the Department of History and Philosophy was proud to recognize Liberty Moench with this honor. Liberty is an Advanced Bachelors-to-Masters student taking three graduate courses, interning with the Chappie James Museum, and conducting research on Pensacola’s historic San Carlos Hotel.

Her dedication and passion for research truly represent the spirit of academic excellence across our college.

Congratulations to Liberty and all of this year’s award recipients, and thank you to the Office of Undergraduate Research for hosting this special event.

Congratulations to our own Rockie Jarvis on receiving a 2026 UWF Student Government Association Distinguished Staff Award!

As Lab Manager for the UWF Archaeology Institute, Rockie creates a welcoming, hands-on learning environment while mentoring students and sharing real-world experience in cultural resource management. Rockie was nominated by the students he works with in the lab, which speaks to the meaningful impact he has made in less than a year since taking on the role.

We’re proud of the supportive space Roc has built and the lasting connections he fosters across our campus community!

Della Scott-Ireton, associate director of the Florida Public Archaeology Network, is featured in Florida Currents Magazine for her work in maritime archaeology and public outreach.

The article highlights her role in studying and preserving Florida’s shipwrecks and helping make these sites accessible through education and the state’s underwater archaeological preserves. Often described as “museums in the sea,” these sites allow divers to explore history firsthand while reinforcing the importance of protecting shared cultural resources.

On Wednesday, April 8th, the Office of Compensation Court accepted an invitation from the Department of Criminology, Criminal Justice, and Legal Studies to hold court hearings in the Legal Studies Mock Trial Courtroom. Judge Jonathan Walker presided over the hearings, and litigants and attorneys appeared either in-person or via Zoom. Students were able to witness the court proceedings live. The ability to witness court proceedings on campus was an incredible opportunity to see the law in action. More importantly, students were able to take what they had learned in the classroom and apply it to understand what was happening in the courtroom.

Each attorney, as well as Judge Walker, took time after each hearing to speak directly with students about the practice of law. Special thanks go to Judge Jonathan Walker, Judge David Langham, and attorneys Brian Carter of the firm Michles & Booth, Mary Cruickshank, and Ferman Fernandez, all of whom generously donated their time to make this an enriched learning experience for students.
