I received a question from a veterinary nurse asking for more information about U-40 vs. U-100 insulin syringes—specifically, how to draw up insulin correctly and exactly how the syringes are different.

And I know how confusing this can be!

While researching this post, I learned that insulin doesn't just come in U-40 and U-100 concentrations. There are also much more concentrated formulations, including U-300 and U-500 insulin!

So what do those numbers mean?

They tell you how many units of insulin are contained in 1 mL:

U-40 = 40 units/mL
U-100 = 100 units/mL

That means U-100 insulin is 2.5× more concentrated than U-40 insulin.

And that's why the syringes look different!

With a U-40 syringe:
10 units = 0.25 mL

With a U-100 syringe:
10 units = 0.1 mL

U-40 syringes are typically identified by a red cap, while U-100 syringes typically have an orange cap.

More concentrated insulins such as U-300 and U-500 are generally administered using their dedicated insulin pens rather than trying to measure these tiny volumes in a standard insulin syringe. U-500 insulin has dedicated U-500 pens and syringes.

What’s in a Bird’s Blood? A Hands-On Approach to Avian Hematology
This practical session will guide participants through the preparation and systematic evaluation of avian blood films, with an emphasis on wildlife species. Attendees will learn to identify avian leukocytes, estimate total white blood cell numbers, perform a leukocyte differential, assess thrombocyte numbers, and recognize common blood parasites, including Haemoproteus, Leukocytozoon, and Plasmodium. The session will emphasize a consistent, clinically useful approach that can be applied even when automated cell counts and species-specific reference intervals are unavailable.

Presenter: Francisco O. Conrado, DVM, MSc, DACVP (Clinical)
Dr. Conrado is an Associate Professor in the Department of Comparative Pathobiology at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. He received his veterinary degree and initial clinical pathology training in Brazil and completed additional residency training in clinical pathology at the University of Florida. He is a board-certified veterinary clinical pathologist, serves as Residency Coordinator for the Clinical Pathology Residency Program, and directs the second-year Foundational Clinical Pathology course at Tufts. His clinical and research interests include diagnostic cytology and hematology, the clinical pathology of exotic and wildlife species, interpretation of laboratory data, and the development and validation of emerging diagnostic technologies. Dr. Conrado also chairs the Technology and Innovations Committee of the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology (ASVCP), where he promotes advances in digital pathology and diagnostic innovation.
