You are invited to attend an informational session about a VERY special opportunity to study abroad in Florence, Italy, during summer 2027! Consider applying for the Mary T. Wolfe Primavera Seminar, taught by Professor Terry-Fritsch between May 17-June 25, 2027. The upper-level Art History focuses on "The Art of Partying in the Renaissance" and the social world of 15th and 16th century Florence. Students will be trained for firsthand examinations of Renaissance ceramics, metals, glass, textiles, architecture, sculpture, and painting and will be given unlimited entry to many of the finest museums in the world. School of Art students are eligible to win a full- or partial-scholarship to attend the seminar (sponsored by the Wolfe Family Foundation and the RING Foundation).

We are excited to host the 2026 FOCUS Show - open now through September 12. Join us for tonight's reception from 6-8p.m., we'll begin with awards in the Donnell Theatre (6-7p.m., inside the Wolfe Center) before walking next door to the Fine Arts Center to enjoy the exhibition from 7-8p.m.

Behind every piece of artwork that hangs on the wall, there is an art educator who saw potential before it ever hit the canvas. Long before a student’s work is framed, mat-boarded, and displayed for the community to admire, you are the ones in the studio guiding their hands, challenging their perspective, pushing them past creative blocks, and helping them find their unique artistic voice.

Mentoring young artists takes an enormous amount of patience, heart, and energy. You don't just teach techniques and mediums—you cultivate confidence, create safe spaces for self-expression, and inspire students to see the world differently. Entering your students' work into the FOCUS Show year after year is a testament to your unwavering devotion to their growth and recognition.

As we prepare for this year’s exhibition, please take a moment to reflect on the immense impact you make every single day. You should be exceptionally proud of the work you do and the courage you instill in these young artists.

Join the BGSU School of Art tonight, September 3, for the opening reception of the 2026 FOCUS Show as we celebrate student artists from northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. The FOCUS Show Awards Ceremony will take place at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, September 3, 2026, in the Donnell Theatre at the Wolfe Center for the Arts on the BGSU campus. Following the ceremony, guests are invited to view the exhibition at the Dorothy Uber Bryan Gallery in the Fine Arts Center.
At its heart, FOCUS is not simply about awards or recognition. It is about giving young people a place to share how they see and experience the world.
“Every work of art represents a young person making sense of the world through their own eyes,” said Jennifer Moorman, co-director of the FOCUS Show. “What makes FOCUS so meaningful is that for 55 years, educators and universities have believed those voices are worth bringing into the light and celebrating together. That is a beautiful legacy to carry forward.”
The 2026 exhibition is a testament to the dedication of art educators who continue to give their time voluntarily to ensure that students have this opportunity. Their work behind the scenes — organizing, preparing, hanging and presenting the exhibition — is an essential part of the tradition.

For 55 years, the FOCUS Show has provided young artists across Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan high schools with something truly meaningful: the opportunity to have their creative voices seen, celebrated and honored in a professional gallery setting.
The 2026 FOCUS Show continues that legacy at Bowling Green State University, bringing together talented student artists from schools throughout Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan.
The FOCUS Show Exhibition is open now through September 12. The Awards Ceremony will take place at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, September 3, 2026, in the Donnell Theatre at the Wolfe Center for the Arts on the BGSU campus. Save the date and ink a plate! The Arts Commission hosts Toledo’s first-ever printmaking festival at our new home in Uptown Toledo. This community event will feature live demos, hands-on projects, a vendor fair, music, food trucks and more. Meet local and regional printmakers, purchase original and limited-edition works of art, and try your hand at some accessible printmaking methods. Demonstrations and activities are free; vendor merchandise and snacks available for purchase.

Congratulations to Rachel Miller (Studio BFA, 2025) on having her work shown, and being presented with Best in Show, for Manifest Gallery’s 22nd Annual Emerging Artists Exhibition, Rites of Passage! Rachel had two pieces in the exhibition with her drawing titled Nada Permanece Como Era receiving the award for Best in Show. You can see the work in person at Manifest Gallery now through June 6. Rachel is joined in the show by fellow artists Andie Arana Gomez, Yadira Gonzalez Perez, Jake Jessop, Antonia Kistler Ellis, Mia Martin, Delaney Matthews, Emily Settles, and Lydia Wickham.
Manifest Gallery was founded in 2004 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Manifest has worked towards community revitalization and uplifting community artists for more than 20 years, including extensive work with undergraduate artists. Shout out to our Summer 2026 Mural Class! Led by Yusuf Lateef, BGSU School of Art faculty known for his regional work in murals, the students completed two murals in the Junction neighborhood in Toledo. Students worked closely with local advocates working at the Junction Coalition to make sure the work reflected the spirit and culture of the neighborhood.
The summer mural class has been running for several decades, with murals by BGSU School of Art students spread across northwest Ohio. This class is a fantastic opportunity for our students to get a hands-on experience working with clients and creating large-scale, public art.
Huge thanks to the Junction Coalition and Yusuf Lateef for making this opportunity possible! Thanks to all the students, and especially our grad assistant Subeksha, for their work on these projects that beautify our community.

Former BGSU School of Art undergrad Laura Makar was recently appointed Curator, Exhibitions & Collections at Elaine L. Jacob and Art Department Galleries, Wayne State University. Students from the 2-D Art Association (2DAA – student club) were able to meet with her last month on their field trip to Detroit, where she was busy installing UNDERGROUND – Keith Haring: Subway Drawings, a stunning exhibit which will travel to a number of important venues.

Laura Makar was born in Buffalo, NY and grew up in Toledo, OH. She earned her BFA, Bowling Green State University, OH, in 2009 and her MFA at Wayne State University (WSU) in 2014. She was awarded the 2013 Thomas C. Rumble Graduate Fellowship, WSU, and most recently received an exhibition award for her artwork at the Terrain: 2018 Biennial All Media Exhibition, Detroit Artists Market. Laura has exhibited her work locally and nationally; including exhibitions in California, Georgia, New York, and North Dakota. Additionally, Laura has had solo exhibitions at Whitdel Arts, Detroit; ROY G BIV Gallery, Columbus, OH; and Manifest Gallery, Cincinnati, OH. Since 2015, Laura has served as the Gallery Manager for the Elaine L. Jacob Gallery and Art Department Gallery, WSU.
