COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT with Sherri Pennington

This week, on Sunday, May 31, I’m honored to welcome a dynamic voice who is helping to keep the spirit and movement of Juneteenth alive, visible, and deeply rooted in our community — Dr. Movita Johnson-Harrell

From raising the Juneteenth flag high as a symbol of freedom and forward movement… to honoring the footsteps of trailblazers like Dr. Opal Lee, the grandmother of Juneteenth… to uplifting powerful cultural spaces like Africatown and major gatherings like ACANA — Movita continues to do the work of connection, education, healing, and celebration.

We’ll talk about what it means to not just remember history… but to activate it… to walk it… and to pass it forward to the next generation as well as catch up on her non-stop positive example and contribution to our community.

Tune in and join this important conversation on Community Spotlight — “News That You Can Use!” — and learn about the flag-raising on June 1, honoring the “angriest man in America” — Michael Coard, Esq.

This Sunday, May 24th, on Community Spotlight, we bring you an interesting conversation with a man who has been preserving the spirit of jazz for over 45 years.

Meet H Alonzo Jennings—photographer, poet, radio host, and cultural documentarian.
From photographing legendary jazz musicians…To writing poetry that speaks to love, justice, and the human condition…To curating sound on Jazz From An Eclectic Mind…on WPPM - Alonzo doesn’t just observe culture—he captures it, protects it, and gives it back to us in ways that make us think, feel, and reflect.

During this conversation, we will address:

- The power of words
- The responsibility of storytelling
- Preserving Black cultural history
- And finding those “sublime moments” that elevate the human spirit
