As Philadelphia faces heavier storms and increasing pressure on its aging sewer system, expanding these solutions is becoming more important than ever, especially in neighborhoods facing flooding and other environmental challenges.

Congrats to two members of our Grad Group!

The newest member of the EES Grad Group, Assistant Professor Xin Sun of the Department of Biology, received the American Geophysical Union Early Career Award for Ocean Sciences for her contributions to the ocean sciences within 10 years of receiving her Ph.D.

EES Assistant Professor Einara Zahn received a DOE Early Career Award for her research "Sea-breeze intrusion in coastal cities: from urban boundary layer structure to building energy demand."

Particulate Matter Emissions and Soil Moisture Dynamics in Salt-Affected Soils
Wednesday, October 14 • 12 p.m. • Hayden 360
Featuring Ganesh Khatai, PhD, Salinization could affect nearly half of the world’s arable land by 2050. Using wind-tunnel experiments, field PI-SWERL measurements, and soil physics, this talk shows how soil salinity, sodicity, humidity, and disturbance shape dust emissions and soil-moisture dynamics in salt affected soils. These findings can improve dust-risk predictions and management of saline croplands.

The Perry World House (PWH), the University of Pennsylvania’s home for global affairs, has selected 25 graduate students to form the 2026-27 cohort of our Perry World House Graduate Fellows Program. Two of the selected graduate students are in the Department of Earth and Environmental Science: Chris Larson and Lillian Miller.

"It has always been my goal to utilize my research to help implement effective climate policy," said Chris Larson. "The Perry World House Graduate Fellows program will provide me with the skills necessary for translating my research into the policy space, and develop tools such as policy memo-writing, communicating my research to a broad audience, and how to meet with legislators in the culmination of the program, with a visit to Capitol Hill. It is my hope that this program can help catapult my career into climate policy."
