What happens when two Hawks mix an entrepreneurial spirit with a love of food and culture? 🌶️🍜

Cat Huang, BS ’96, and Kevin Huang, MS ’93, turned their love of Sichuan and Taiwanese cuisine into DanDan - Rittenhouse, now serving up bold flavors at three locations across the Philadelphia area. From their first location in Rittenhouse to their newest spots in Wayne and Ardmore, the Hawkmates have built a business centered on food, culture and community.

If Philly had a living room, it might look a lot like Bar Hygge. Owned by Stewart Keener, BA ’94, and his wife, Julie, the Spring Garden staple has spent more than 10 years serving craft beer, shareable dishes and a welcoming atmosphere. Their commitment to sustainability is just as strong as their commitment to hospitality, thanks to an extensive composting program that gives back to the Philadelphia community.

🤔How would you describe your restaurant to someone who has never been there before?
➡️Stewart: Cozy and comfortable. Bar Hygge was built to be a place where people connect on a meaningful level. There are no TVs and the decor is rustic and relaxed, built with almost all repurposed material. Hygge is a Danish concept that means "a cozy feeling of connection to the moment and to each other." We really wanted to embody that here.
