For alumna Dr. Shanda McManus, medicine and personal loss have been intertwined throughout her life. Her passion for medicine began at a young age, as she helped care for her mother through a battle with ovarian cancer. Years later, as a first-year medical student at Jefferson, Dr. McManus experienced the loss of her younger brother, Monir, and carried her grief for over three decades. Through intimate letters to her brother, she found a way to process that loss and tell his story — work that became her debut memoir, “Brother Epistles.”

This month, Dr. McManus returns to Jefferson for “Bearing Witness to Loss from Inside a White Coat,” the opening event of the 2026-27 Jefferson Humanities Forum. Join her for a conversation about grief, memory, medicine, and the human stories behind loss:

📍Sept. 15, 12-1 p.m. on Center City Campus
📍Sept. 23, 4-5 p.m. on East Falls Campus

From college sweethearts to medical students, mentors, and now philanthropists, alumna Dr. Kathleen Shander Guarnieri ’84 and her husband, Dr. David Guarnieri, are paying forward the support that helped make their careers possible.

Jefferson played an important role in the early stages of their careers, with both later returning to Jefferson as anesthesiologists and educators.

Inspired by the scholarships they received as students, the couple established a scholarship at Jefferson to help medical students pursue their dreams and create opportunities for future physicians.

“Every generation has to keep looking out for the next in line,” Dr. David Guarnieri says.

A thoughtful idea from a colleague and a student at Jefferson College of Rehabilitation Sciences - Thomas Jefferson University is making a difference in the patient experience.

Lori Barcello, an occupational therapist at Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation, and Emily Toft, a doctor of occupational therapy student, recognized the important role hair care can play in a patient’s confidence, dignity, and well-being during rehabilitation.

Together, they created a “Hair Care Menu” to give occupational therapists access to products, such as scalp relief wipes, detangler, and conditioner, to better support the diverse needs of their patients.
