Midwifery & Women's Health Programs

Midwifery & Women's Health Programs The Midwifery Institute at Jefferson is committed to the development of the profession of midwifery. The Midwifery Institute continues to have this focus.

The Midwifery & Women's Health Programs at Thomas Jefferson University has an online learning model that includes MS, DM, Post-Grad Certificate, Dual MS/DM or Post-Grad/DM Degrees, Midwifery Completion, and Re-entry to Clinical Practice Programs We believe that midwives provide a distinctive type of care that benefits women, individuals, families, and communities. The Midwifery Institute's mission

statement is “to promote midwifery for the betterment of women's health.” That mission is realized through consulting, research, and both continuing and basic midwifery education. The Midwifery Institute was founded in 1996 by a group of midwifery educators as the Institute of Midwifery, Women, and
Health. The Founding Board of Directors all had extensive experience in midwifery practice and education. They wanted to create an institution that would speak clearly on issues related to midwifery in the United States. We want midwifery care to be available in every community in our country. Therefore, we have designed the midwifery educational program as a community-based distance learning program. The students who are attracted to the program represent a cross-section of the profession for whom on-campus programs are inaccessible. The reasons may relate to their geographic locale, the expense of many university programs, or their need for more creative scheduling of their studies. Many of the students come from small towns and rural communities, where they plan to stay. Of our graduates, 46% are working in rural or underserved areas. We are a dynamic organization full of creative, flexible and experienced people. We eagerly consider new solutions and pathways that assist us in our goal of promoting midwifery.

👋 Tomorrow is the International Day of the Midwife. To celebrate, meet Kyra Sarazen, a dual MS in Midwifery and Doctor of Midwifery Student in the Jefferson College of Health Professions.

Why did you choose Jefferson?
💙 I was impressed by the program’s legacy and contributions toward advancing midwifery as a distinct profession within the U.S., and it’s the only school in the country that offers the Doctor of Midwifery. Furthermore, the online learning format—paired with the ability to complete my clinical training in my own community—has offered a great deal of flexibility and balance in my personal and professional life.

What’s the best part of your studies?
📚 I love the self-directed nature of the program, which has allowed me to create and tailor my study schedule to fit my needs. The program itself also uses the midwifery model of care to support learning in the way that our professors meet us where we’re at and walk alongside us as we develop into our midwife selves.

What’s something people would be surprised to find out about you?
🏊‍♀️ I was a competitive swimmer for 17 years and competed in the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Trials.

Tell us about a meaningful project you’ve worked on:
🌍 I spent last year completing my midwifery studies in Sierra Leone, where I worked as a program manager to support the opening of a Maternal Center of Excellence in the rural Kono District. Being able to develop and hone my own midwifery knowledge through my coursework while simultaneously supporting the implementation of a project that increases access to midwifery services was truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
