Global Studies at Temple

An interdisciplinary program at Temple University focusing on global cultures, security, and economy.

The world is increasingly globalized, with goods, services, people, and ideas traveling across borders more, and more quickly, than ever before. Temple University and its College of Liberal Arts are also globalizing, offering students a wide array of majors in the social sciences, humanities, and area studies programs in Asian and Latin American studies. The Global Studies Program, established in

Fall 2015, is the latest step in the globalization of the College of Liberal Arts. Starting Fall 2015, Temple undergraduates can declare a major in Global Studies – an interdisciplinary program bringing together coursework from across a dozen departments, focused on the study of Global Security, Global Economy, and Global Cultures, and complemented by intensive language instruction and study abroad options. Beyond the Global Studies major and minor, the new Global Studies Program will serve as a focal point for all things global at CLA. Please join us in less than two weeks for an exciting talk with Dr. Amelia Frank-Vitale, entitled "Leave If You Can: Migration and Violence in Bordered Worlds."

Amelia Frank-Vitale is Assistant Professor of Anthropology and International Affairs at Princeton University. An anthropologist of migration and violence in Central America and Mexico, Dr. Frank-Vitale has documented the dangers facing people migrating across Mexico and the strategies they develop – including coming together in caravans – to manage those risks and defy restrictions on movement. Her book, Leave If You Can: Migration and Violence in Bordered Worlds, examines how Honduran youth navigate life after deportation, illuminating the changing nature of deportation as a consequence of the externalization of borders and connecting regimes of mobility control - and the creative ways people challenge them - across scale and space.

Global Studies student Sofia Barcelona just returned from a service immersion trip to Peru. While there, she led a community activity using a glow-germ solution for over 40 children in three different grade levels at the elementary school in Compone, Peru. She also helped developed a water quality survey that her group administered alongside students from National University of San Antonio Abad of Cusco (UNSAAC). The group of students went house to house administering to residents of Ancahuasi to assess their water access, quality, and challenges.
