Check out this amazing leadership development opportunity!

The Up to Us Leadership Network Fiscal Leadership Lab focuses on educating the next generation of civic leaders on fiscal issues and sharpening their natural advocacy and organizing skills to drive meaningful and sustainable policy change. Over the course of six months (December through May), undergraduate students from across the country will engage in both virtual national trainings and regional in-person learning opportunities.

🍉🍅🥑🫑🌶️🌽 Summer term's Community-Engaged Learning course, "Women in Food", was an amazing experience for the students, instructors, and partners.

The course brought students around the city to places such as Puentes de Salud and the Reinhard Street Garden, where Mexican culinary culture is being preserved. But mostly it took place in the Drexel Food Lab, where "cocineras" (talented, local Mexican women chefs) demonstrated their talents in preparing traditional dishes like tamales, tlacoyos, aguas frescas, wedding cookies, and chocolate and graciously sharing their histories and hopes with the students.

At the end of the course, students presented their own dishes that fused the Mexican traditional flavors and techniques they learned with food that represents their own experiences. The course also inspired a public booklet describing traditional Mexican culinary tools, ingredients, and recipes, with workbook pages for people who want to document their own culinary traditions.

One student said about the course: "I had such insightful connections and conversations ... Overall, that class was an experience I will take with me.”

✨ First Friday is back and we're digging in the dirt! ✨

Ok not actually but we WILL be joined by folks who ARE digging in the dirt as part of - a community archaeology project that uncovers stories of the former Black Bottom neighborhood.

Come by anytime this Friday between noon and 1 to talk to the Heritage West folks about what they're doing and how to plug in, learn from Lindy Center staff and student leaders about civic engagement generally, and enjoy coffee, tea, and treats!
