The Lindy Center for Civic Engagement fosters a culture of civic responsibility by providing programs and resources that empower Drexel students and the broader university community to expand their civic identities through engagement in mutually-beneficial partnerships that lead to a more just society.

For this , prolific writer and liberatory educator bell hooks shares the importance of having a goal in civic engagement. It's not enough to just identify issues in our communities - we also have to envision the community we want and plan how to get there.

About bell hooks (1951-2021): hooks was an American Author, Activist, Feminist and Scholar. Born Gloria Jean Watkins, she took her pen name after her Great Grandmother, Bell Blair Hooks, and decided to spell it in all lowercase to focus reader’s attention on her books rather than her identity. hooks published over 70 works throughout her career ranging from film to Children’s books. This quote is from her 2003 book, “Teaching Community: a Pedagogy of Hope.”

📣📣📣 VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY!

Home fires are increasing in the neighborhoods around Drexel and you can help local families recover!

The American Red Cross needs volunteers to support disaster response in two flexible roles:

• 🚒 Disaster Action Team (DAT): Respond on scene to help families after a home fire or other local disaster.

• 💻 Duty Officer: Coordinate disaster response remotely from home.

Training is provided, and you choose the times you’re available to volunteer each month.

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to support your community, this is an opportunity to make a real difference for your neighbors when they need it most.

💪🏻 Strengthen your civic engagement skills at this workshop on Tuesday. Dinner will be provided!

➡️ How do you know where to focus your civic engagement efforts? How can you find out what issues are most pressing for the people in your community? How can you do the “collective, public problem-solving” process that is central to civic engagement? Join Lindy Center for an interactive “Social Needs Assessment” workshop focused on practical methods of identifying community needs and analyzing social challenges. During the workshop, participants will explore research methods commonly used in social projects and community work and learn how data can support meaningful social impact.
