If you are already working hard to customize the structure of your resumes for every job you are applying to, the next step might be to refine your bullet points so that they are working as hard as possible to illustrate your relevant skills in action – no matter what role or industry you are seeking.

In this session, we will cover the art of writing bullet points that showcase relevant skills with enough context to make the skill make sense, and an outcome that provides objective evidence that your skills have real impact.

Bring a garment to repair. Learn basic skills related to hand-sewing, darning, and other kinds of visible mending with Mimi, who mends imperfectly (and that's kind of the point!).

Some garments are harder to repair than others!
We do not recommend bringing:
Things made with stretchy fabrics (leggings, swimwear, stretchy jeans)❗Even jersey t-shirts can be challenging.
Silky or gauzy material❗These will tear and not repair with the techniques we'll practice ❗
Cashmere ❗Cashmere is knit very fine with teeny tiny needles. It should only be repaired after plenty of practice.

Have fun if you dare!🎃👻

The Spooktacular Playdate is an annual event that invites Halloween traditions like costumes and candy for families with young children to gather and celebrate together. Featuring spooky-themed snacks and activities, all ages can expect to have a great time. Families are welcome to dress-up, dance, trade stories, and participate in hands-on (and a little messy) fun!!

This event is OPEN to student, staff, faculty, postdoc, and visiting scholar parents with young children.

**Advance Registration is required. This opportunity is sponsored by the Family Resource Center and the Penn Women’s Center.

Location: 3615 Locust Walk, Lower Level of the Graduate Student Center

Date: Saturday, October 24th

Time: 10:30am-12:00pm

Please be sure to review Family Center visitor guidelines in advance. Attendees who are not registered with the Family Center will be asked to sign an attestation waiver agreeing to these guidelines on arrival at the event in order to participate.

But a lot of graduate students often feel like they are navigating things for the first time in their program while their peers seem to have it all figured out. It can seem like everyone knows something you don't or has access to inside information. Well, we're here to tell you that those feelings are valid and there is a hidden curriculum in graduate school.

PhD students have access to a wide range of professional development opportunities, but it can sometimes be hard to determine what is most useful, what is expected, and how to make time for activities beyond research and coursework. This is especially challenging when an advisor takes a hands-off approach to mentoring and professional development.

This workshop will help participants take a proactive and intentional approach to their professional growth. Students will reflect on their goals, identify areas for development, and consider how to prioritize opportunities without feeling pressure to do everything. Participants will also explore strategies for initiating conversations about professional development and advocating for their needs with advisors and other mentors.

There are two versions of this workshop: one for students in STEM programs and one for students in the humanities and social sciences. Please register for the session most applicable to you at the link in our bio or visit gsc.upenn.edu/events.

Build confidence, practice conversation, and learn together at the Family Center.

The Family Center is partnering with Penn’s TESOL MSEd Program to offer FREE virtual English conversation lessons for spouses and adult family members of current graduate/professional students and Family Center members.

📅 Sept. 30–Dec. 2 | Weekly

🗓 Wednesdays 10:00-11:30am and Thursdays 10:30-12:00pm

💻 Virtual via Zoom

Beginner learners are welcome! Practice everyday conversations and learn useful English for real-life situations with Penn TESOL graduate student-trainees.

📌 Registration required. Participants must be registered by an eligible Penn graduate/professional student or Family Center member and Participants must reside in the U.S.
