Notan is a Japanese word that describes the harmony between light and dark. In design, notan refers to the balance between positive and negative space. While the "three major volumes" of the head, ribcage, and pelvis form the base of a figure sketch, being able to accurately render limbs and appendages is just as necessary! Students in Figure Drawing learn to capture the proportion and bone structure of limbs, spending extra time working on hands and feet, as all of the small bones, muscles, and contours make these subjects extra tricky.
