The Philadelphia Tribune explored how Philly teachers and administrators are putting our Pioneering AI in School Systems program, or PASS, program to use. PASS—which helps administrators, school leaders, and teachers develop AI literacy, lead strategic planning efforts, and ethically use AI—started as a pilot program in Philadelphia, but has expanded to districts in three states.

Last week, the McGraw Center for Educational Leadership hosted a screening of the documentary "First They Came for My College" about New College of Florida followed by a conversation with that school's former president, Patricia Okker, the film's producer, Harry William Hanbury, and Jonathan Zimmerman, the Judy and Howard Berkowitz Professor in Education at Penn GSE. McGraw Center Executive Director John Silvanus Wilson, Jr. moderated.

The panelists discussed college leadership, the necessity of building public confidence in higher ed, the importance of building networks before you need them and more.

Rachel Baker and Julie Wollman took students in their "Public Policy Seminar" to Washington, DC to learn from government relations staff at several national organizations—the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the American Council on Education, the State Higher Education Executive Officers organization—that help to shape higher education policy in the US.

These students are in our Executive Doctorate in Higher Ed Management program and their seminar focuses on state policy and governance related to post-secondary education access, affordability, financing, and outcomes in each state context. Their DC visit focused on national policy and how it connects to, shapes and is shaped by state policy.

Before graduating from our Learning Sciences and Technologies master’s program, Jiayue Chai GED’26, stepped outside the education classroom and into "How to Make Things" at Penn Engineering, taught by Taylor Caputo, director of the Engineering Studio @ Venture Lab and lecturer in the School of Engineering and Applied Science.

A visit to the Fisher Fine Arts Materials Library sparked an idea: Jiayue was fascinated by an acrylic sample whose laser-cut edges seemed to sparkle when they caught the light. She brought that inspiration into the studio, experimenting with the technique and fabricating this beautiful piece: My Valuable Harvesting Knife.

Today, Jiayue is bringing that same spirit of curiosity, creativity, and hands-on learning to her own classroom as a computer science teacher at Princeton Day School.

We love seeing how Penn GSE students explore ideas across disciplines and across Penn, and how those experiences continue to shape the educators they become.
