Professors Xin Sun, Abdulhamit Arvas, and Bo Zhen are featured in Penn Today's roundup of accolades for faculty at Penn.

Xin Sun, Assistant Professor of Biology won the AGU Early Career Award for Ocean Sciences for her contributions to the ocean sciences within 10 years of receiving her Ph.D.

Abdulhamit Arvas, Associate Professor of English, received the Phyllis Goodhart Gordan Book Prize for his outstanding scholarship in Renaissance studies.

Bo Zhen, Jin K. Lee Presidential Professor of Physics and Astronomy, is among the 2026 cohort of Moore Foundation Experimental Physics Investigators.

Don't miss a free screening of ward-winning filmmaker Rita Coburn’s documentary W.E.B. Du Bois: Rebel With A Cause on Thursday, October 22, 2026. Penn philosopher Daniele Lorenzini and religious studies professor Donovan Schaefer, who organized a recent symposium on the French philosopher, reflect on the influence of Foucault and his writings on power.

“I’d say Foucault’s success as a scholar is largely derived from his allergy to academic orthodoxy,” Schaefer says. “His major insight was that rather than sociopolitical systems being driven by an overarching rationality—like class struggle or class dominance—they are actually much more influenced by accidents of history and by small-scale forms of human interaction that scale up.”

The Linguistic Data Consortium (LDC), directed by linguistics professor Mark Liberman, provides data that has played a crucial role in developing large language models. The consortium, which is hosted at Penn, is instrumental in widespread adoption of collaborative research methodologies, and is collaborating on interdisciplinary research in language technologies, medicine, and education.

Modern large language models “wouldn’t exist without the LDC,” says Liberman, the Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Linguistics. The LDC was also instrumental in widespread adoption of the “common task method,” a collaborative but competitive research model that has spurred innovation in fields from LLMs to robotics, he adds.

The Linguistic Data Consortium provides data that has played a crucial role in developing large language models, is instrumental in widespread adoption of collaborative research methodologies, and is collaborating on interdisciplinary research in language technologies, medicine, and education.

Amy Rose Juang, C’20, is a product marketing manager for GenStudio at Adobe, using AI to advance the goals of other marketing teams. Her current role centers on B2B marketing, but since starting at Adobe six years ago, she’s been part of diverse projects—spanning from working with state governments to pro bono consulting for the San Francisco Public Library. Though in a business role, Juang reflects that one of her favorite things about working at Adobe is being around so many creative people. As a visual studies major and self-proclaimed generalist, she emphasizes how important she finds being creative in all aspects of her life.

In a nod to her own academic pursuits and early career, Juang has some advice for young professionals facing a shifting landscape due to AI. “It’s more important than ever to be able to form your own perspective in an AI-centric world,” she says. “If you are driven, resourceful, and you love to learn and create, you’ll find where you’re supposed to be.”

On the occasion of the nation’s 250th anniversary, a special partnership between Gwendolyn DuBois Shaw of the Arthur Ross Gallery and Emma Hart of Penn’s McNeil Center for Early American History expands knowledge about the nascent American republic.

“The number of people who study the era before 1850—even during this 250th anniversary of the United States—is diminishing,” says Hart. “At the McNeil Center, we feel that our role as the leading center of early American studies is to be the torchbearers and to show as many people as possible why it’s still important to pursue scholarship in this area. Gwendolyn’s lectures and everything she does with the Arthur Ross Gallery help tremendously in that mission. I hope we do much more together in the future.”
