Week 4 Reminder: You Were Empowered to Win
On July 8, 2025, the Mandela Washington Fellows at Drexel University gathered for the Dornsife Center Community Dinner, part of our weekly theme: Cooperation, Consensus Building & Influence.
It was more than a meal; it was a moment.
Two Fellows won bicycles through a wiffle ball raffle hosted by the Drexel University Police Department, proof that joy and generosity go hand in hand.
Our Education Cluster received donated academic books from a local partner, reinforcing our shared commitment to learning and leadership.
These wins weren’t isolated. They were part of a larger story of empowerment, collaboration, and daily growth. Week 4 simply reminded us of what’s been true all summer: the Dragon spirit lives in every Fellow, and the Drexel Mandela community in Philadelphia has shown up with heart, warmth, and unwavering support.
To our Drexel partners, staff, and neighbors: thank you for investing in young African leaders.
To our Fellows: you were here winning every day, now go win for your communities. We are here, rooting for you and the incredible impact you're making across the continent of Africa.
Go Dragons. Go Fellows. Keep leading. Keep winning.

Cultural Showcase, We Miss You Already…

On July 25, 2025, before saying goodbye, the Mandela Fellows at Drexel University, representing 20 different African countries; lit up the stage with a celebration of rich African heritage through dance, song, and cultural performances that left us amazed and deeply moved.

From traditional rhythms to vibrant attire, every moment was a tribute to the diversity, pride, and unity that define our continent.

It wasn’t just a performance, it was a declaration: We are leaders, rooted in culture and rising with purpose.

With the tools gained and leadership sharpened here at Drexel University, USA, go forth and lead with the Dragon’s spirit and energy: bold, visionary, and unstoppable.

Fellows, thank you for bringing stories to life, we miss you. Your energy, your artistry, your leadership… it echoes still.

Drexel Mandela Fellows at the United Nations.
On Monday, July 14, the Mandela Washington Fellows from Drexel University visited the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.
A Fellow excited about the visit remarked, “Who comes to the US without visiting NEW YORK?”
Through guided tours and discussions, Fellows explored the UN’s core pillars: peace and security, sustainable development, and human rights, gaining a deeper understanding of global governance and diplomacy.
This experience underscored the importance of system-level change, and the role civic leaders play in driving innovation and social entrepreneurship to address complex challenges. Whether advocating for inclusive policies, launching community initiatives, or building cross-sector partnerships, these young changemakers are shaping a future rooted in collaboration and impact.
Some Fellows also visited Meta’s New York office for a learning exchange on digital innovation and storytelling, while others explored Manhattan’s cultural landmarks, connecting local experiences with global perspectives.
It was a day of inspiration, reflection, and renewed commitment to leadership with purpose.

As we continue a journey centered on civic leadership development and meaningful exchange, we pause to reflect on a truly impactful week.
On Thursday, July 10, our Mandela Fellows based at Drexel University joined peers from Rutgers, UMBC, and the University of Delaware for a vibrant networking BBQ hosted at UD. The day was far more than just good barbecue, it was a celebration of shared purpose, inter-campus connection, and heartfelt community.
One particularly resonant moment came from Governor Matt Meyer’s keynote address, where he candidly shared reflections from his time living in Kenya. His words, anchored in humility, service, and global understanding, echoed the core values that shape our Fellowship.
While this gathering was a highlight, it marks just one chapter in a growing story. Stay tuned as we continue sharing transformative experiences, including a recent visit to the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. There, diplomacy and youth leadership intertwined, offering the Fellows an immersive look at global engagement and cross-cultural dialogue.
Leadership is everywhere: in shared stories, in diplomatic spaces, and in the everyday moments that forge lasting impact. Last week reaffirmed that purpose-driven connections are a powerful force for shaping the future.

Leadership Spotlight – Wednesday, July 9
This week, the Mandela Washington Fellows at Drexel University explored the principles of collaboration, consensus-building, and influence, key pillars of transformative civic leadership.
On Wednesday, Fellows engaged in two thought-provoking sessions:
•Common Leadership Curriculum with Angela Steel, a strength-based exploration of personal leadership styles, values, and the assets that drive inclusive community impact.
•Moving from Conflict to Collaboration with Henry Yampolsky, offering strategic frameworks for converting tension into productive partnerships and dialogue.
These sessions encouraged Fellows to lead with self-awareness and empathy, reinforcing their capacity to build consensus and effect sustainable change.

Earlier this week, Mandela Fellows at Drexel University participated in a transformative session with leadership coach Jesse Rhodes, exploring how to lead through story and move with purpose.
Through guided reflections and powerful frameworks, Fellows gained tools to connect personal narratives to civic action, building leadership that’s grounded in authenticity and impact.
As a lasting gesture, Jesse autographed and gifted copies of his book, Leadership Unlocked, to each Fellow, unlocking new perspectives and deeper commitment to purposeful leadership.
Thank you, Jesse, for sharing your wisdom, your story, and your gift.

The Fellows at Drexel University closed out last week with remarkable energy, meaningful engagement, and unforgettable experiences.
From insightful leadership sessions focused on understanding personal strengths to impactful community service at MANNA and Philly House, the week reflected the Fellows’ deep commitment to civic action and social impact.
As part of their cultural immersion, the Fellows participated in the celebration of America’s Independence Day, joining festivities across Philadelphia and witnessing the city illuminate with spectacular fireworks. This experience added richness to their understanding of community celebration and national identity in the U.S. context.
Beyond these activities, Week 3 fostered strong relationship-building and meaningful networking, helping Fellows cultivate connections that will support their leadership journeys long after the Fellowship concludes.
As Week 4 begins, we turn our focus to cooperation, consensus building, and influence, core civic leadership skills designed to empower Fellows to lead with clarity, compassion, and purpose. This week represents a critical investment in shaping a better world through dialogue, collaboration, and shared vision.

June 30 and July 1 were powerful days of learning for the Mandela Washington Fellows at Drexel University.
Centered on the theme of Relationship Building and Networking, fellows explored essential leadership skills:
• Foundations for building strong relationships
• Networking and making critical connections
• Effective civic engagement strategies
One of the most engaging moments was the Collective Impact Circle, a space for deep dialogue on how shared goals and community collaboration can spark long-term change.
We wrapped up an inspiring event at the Dornsife Center, University–Community Partnerships: Impact in Action, where fellows connected with expert leaders from both academic and civic sectors.
These last two days reminded us that leadership is built on trust, community, and action. And we’re just getting started.
