Continuing to celebrate our 100th birthday with more from our archives. Pictured here is the first director of University Placement Service, Dr. Clarence Clewell. A professor of Engineering, Clewell was an outspoken advocate for helping students with their career journeys through exploration and leveraging the Penn alumni network. In the first two years of his stewardship, the office had established 3000 contacts with firms and during 1927-8, Penn students secured 2000 part time and 587 full time jobs. Clewell served as director for nearly thirty years and his vision still guides us today.

The 2026-27 school year marks the 100th anniversary of the Career Services office, founded in September, 1926 as University Placement Service. Originally located in what is now the Jaffe History of Art Building at 34th & Walnut, our core mission has remained unchanged for a century: to council students and alumni on their career journeys and connect them with opportunities! We'll be showcasing more gems from our archives throughout the year.
