Out here catching warm moments in Wilson courtyard in the early morning before campus wakes up. October plantings are still lush with flowering anemones and lots of other green leaves are thriving. Credit to Apiary Studio for reimagining the space with us! Lounging is welcome and encouraged 24/7.

Self-portrait update! Juniors and seniors in our new Advanced Figure & Oil Painting class are making incredible progress on their portraits—color is being carefully layered in as they continue to build depth, detail, and texture. This isn’t their only assignment! Sometimes it’s helpful to step away from a project and work on something new, then come back to it with fresh perspective. New show alert! Now on view in our Alumni Gallery through November 7, 2026: "Language Studies" by e bond '96. The exhibition features fabric collections and letterpress prints that zero in on (often overlooked) elements of typography. Both collections grew out of a residency at the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum, where e printed directly from the museum's wood type collection.

Join us for the opening reception on Friday, October 9 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm (when we'll also be celebrating a new solo exhibition by alum Michelle Angela Ortiz '00.) And join us again on Thursday, October 29 from 11:30 am – 1 pm via Zoom for an artist talk with e bond and Faculty Emerita of Graphic Design, Gigi McGee. Links in bio.

A peek inside the classroom! Juniors and seniors in Professor Christopher Williams’ Advanced Figure & Oil Painting course have completed the first phase of their portraits—the black and white foundation is now set for the addition of color! Stay tuned in the coming weeks as we see these works develop and transform into the finished pieces. Things are looking really good so far and keep up the great work! (This is just a small sampling of projects from the class.)

Big shout out to alum Janet Biggs ’81 whose show “Path of Totality” opened at Cristin Tierney tonight. Featuring two recent video projects, this new exhibition transforms the NY gallery into an immersive space where darkness allows the viewer to be consumed by Biggs’ audiovisual experience.

Seen here are clips of her three-channel HD video “Eclipse (Amazon, September 7, 1858)” from 2025. But do not confuse this audio with the artist’s original sound—this is merely our own sound-overlay-edit for the sake of social media! You have to go see it for yourself to be transported by Biggs’ own spatial recordings.

If you visit The Rockberry in Asheville, NC you can see two monumental works by alum Claire (McCaffrey) Lavin ’69. Situated in the central courtyard, the permanently-installed sculpture & large mosaic wall anchor the modern development’s shared spaces.

The mirrored metal sculpture was designed as part of one of her class projects during her senior year in 1969! Originally sculpted out of clay at 7in. high, Claire remembers welding a small steel version together in the studio—that finished metal piece was 21in. The work you see here is 9ft. tall and fashioned out of stainless steel.

We are so thrilled to see a commissioned work come to life at this scale nearly 60 years after it was originally conceived here on campus at Moore. Congratulations Claire McCaffrey Lavin on this incredible project!
