Seven Penn researchers have been elected to the National Academy of Medicine for their leadership in the fields of genetics, anesthesiology, veterinary medicine, and reproductive health.

Marisa S. Bartolomei, Carsten Gerhart Bönnemann, Max B. Kelz, Meghan Lane-Fall, Kiran Musunuru, and Courtney A. Schreiber of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and Nicola J. Mason of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine are among the Academy’s 100 new members.

Last week, we launched a new cost calculator (cost-calculator.apps.upenn.edu/) that gives families a clear estimate of how much a Penn education could cost. The goal: ensure that everyone who wants to attend Penn knows what the cost could be for their family, because Penn is more affordable than most people realize.

But you can also skip the data entry and get a quick estimate on how much Penn might cost by finding a sample household similar to yours. Inspired by real students' financial circumstances, these examples illustrate Penn's generous financial aid and what the cost of attendance is for different types of families.

Penn’s Quaker Commitment meets 100% of demonstrated financial need with grants and work-study. Families earning up to $200,000 per year with typical assets are provided free tuition; all billable expenses are covered for families earning up to $75,000 per year with typical assets.

Many families with incomes above $200,000 qualify for grant aid, depending on their individual financial circumstances and the number of children in college.

The Howley Foundation has committed $12 million to expand the Howley ASPIRE Nurse Scholars Program, helping Philadelphia students pursue nursing careers through mentorship, clinical experiences, and tuition support.

Acknowledging the support, President J. Larry Jameson said that the program “reflects our commitment to fostering opportunity and creating positive impact that extends beyond our campus across the Philadelphia region.”

Patel earned her B.S.E. and M.S.E. in Bioengineering at Penn through the Accelerated Master’s program before completing an MSc in Applied Digital Health at the University of Oxford. On Wednesday, October 21, she’ll take on the iconic quiz show as a contestant.

The University’s innovation hub, PennovationWorks, has spent the last decade helping companies launch, develop products, and raise capital.

Over the next decade, says Executive Vice President Mark Dingfield, its goal is to sustain and scale that investment. “The breakthroughs that we see ahead are not specific to any one field,” he said. “It’s going to be at the intersection of AI, robotics, life sciences, quantum, and this is really a place where those intersections, those points of creative friction, can develop.”

Penn Arts & Sciences chemist and pharmacologist Dirk Trauner and collaborators have harnessed that pain-relieving power by developing a platform that allows opioid activity in the central nervous system to be turned “on” or “off” with the flick of a light switch.

Their findings pave the way for bypassing opioid addiction and other adverse side effects.
