Dear Member,

We have a packed September and October! Our next regular meeting is at Freemasons' Hall, London, on 14 September when Brent Morris will present The Francken Manuscript Revisited. Francken was a naturalized British citizen from the Caribbean whom Étienne Morin appointed Deputy Inspector General of the twenty-five-degree Order of the Royal Secret. Morin was the presumed founder of the Order, which later transformed into the Rose Croix or Ancient and Accepted Rite - the Scottish Rite. The paper, co-written with Joe Wages, discusses new research on the subject, including the discovery of two more Francken Manuscripts and intriguing details about Francken’s personal life. More information can be found here, together with a copy of the paper. You can book your place to dine after the next meeting by clicking Book to Dine

We are looking forward to seeing many of you at our Cambridge Conference in around six weeks. For those who haven't yet booked, accommodation at Queens' College has sold out, however, alternative accommodation options are available and tickets for the Conference and dinner will remain on sale for the next fortnight: just click here. Those attending should download our Guidance for Delegates and Programme.

If you are travelling to London for the September QC meeting or for any other reason, please make time to look in at the free-to-enter 'Inventing the Future' exhibition at Freemasons' Hall. There are also other talks and presentations that you may be able to attend.

Finally, the Leicester Lodge of Research is holding a fascinating symposium at Freemasons’ Hall, Leicester, on the 1723 Constitutions on Monday, 30 October 2023. The speakers are Prof Andrew Prescott, John Belton, David Wykes, Don Peacock, Mike Karn, Aubrey Newman and Martin Cherry.
You can register your interest in attending by clicking here.

With warm regards

Dear Member,

The Summons for our next meeting on 11 May is now available. John Hawkins, the 2022 Prestonian Lecturer, is speaking on ‘The Royal Family & Freemasonry’, a copy of which can be downloaded here; comments and questions should be addressed to [email protected] for publication in AQC.

Please also diarise the following meeting on 21 June at Freemasons’ Hall, 457 Burton Road, Littleover, Derby DE23 6XX, when Roger Pemberton will give a paper on Charles Shirreff.

Talks by QC members in the US and Canada over the next few months now include the Texas Lodge of Research (17th June); the 2023 International Conference on Freemasonry at UCLA (8th April); Grand Masonic Day 2023 at the Vancouver Masonic Centre (29th April); The Research Lodge of Colorado (also 29th April); and two events in California (1st & 5th July). Just click on the links for details and to book your place.

On a complete tangent, I want to share a picture of a delightful cake made to celebrate a talk given recently at the Leicester Lodge of Research. The cake was absolutely magnificent and this photo demands to be shared widely! The standard has now been set for other Provincial talks!

Finally, we are thinking of holding a research workshop prior to our Cambridge Conference, probably on the morning of 22nd September. Details of the programme, discounted accommodation, and travel options are available on the website, as is the booking form. If you haven't yet booked, please do so and let us know if you might be interested in attending the research workshop.

As always, we look forward to seeing you at one of our events

With warm regards

Ric Berman

Dear Member,

The first batch of this year's AQC has been delivered to our mailing agent from the printer and we will begin sending out copies over the next few weeks. Most will be mailed, but we will be couriering in bulk to North and South America for local distribution. We anticipate that most members will receive their copy of AQC before year-end but, as in prior years, a few copies sent to further flung destinations may not be delivered until after the New Year. There may also be minor delays in the UK given the current issues at Royal Mail.

Our programme of Lodge lectures for 2023 can be viewed online here. And a selection of lectures and talks outside of Lodge here. The latter is updated every month or so as new meetings are arranged, so please check to see what is new.

As many will know, 2023 is the tercentenary of the publication of the 1723 Constitutions and this is being marked with an Especial Meeting of Grand Lodge in January, regional talks, an Exhibition at Freemasons' Hall in London, podcasts, and by our Cambridge Conference from 22-24 September. Events are also taking place in the United States and elsewhere.

The Conference Programme and a Booking Form are available online. Members of QCCC have priority booking at a reduced cost for what will be a popular event. Demand has been such that we now have only a few rooms left at Queens' College, however, we have arranged discounted rates at the Moller Institute (which includes parking), and at The Graduate, the closest hotel to Queens. See Accommodation & Travel for more details.

With warm fraternal regards and best wishes,

Ric Berman

Dear Member,

As you know, our next meeting is on 12 May in Sheffield at Tapton Masonic Hall Shore Lane S10 3BU, and we are looking forward to welcoming members of QCCC and their guests. For those driving, parking is available onsite.

Wives, partners and non-Masonic guests are also invited to join us. The Lodge will open at 4.00 pm and close around 4.40 pm when all will be admitted to listen to Niall Johnson’s Norman B. Spencer prize winning talk - ‘Taking French Leave: Masonic English Napoleonic Prisoners 1803–1814’.

The paper is now available to read online and if you would like to comment on the talk or raise any questions, please send your thoughts to [email protected] prior to the meeting.

There will be a buffet supper after the lecture and everyone is invited to stay and chat informally. The cost is £21 per head, which includes a variety of main options, cheeses, breads and desserts. Drinks will be available at the bar. Please book and pay in advance by downloading and completing the Dining Form. Payment can be made by cheque, BACS or via PayPal.

Preparations are now well underway for our next major Conference at Queens' College Cambridge from 22-24 September 2023. Please hold these dates. We will be releasing more information over the next several months with booking opening in the second half of the year. For information on other QC and QCCC events, please click here.

Lastly, we are delighted to report that QC/QCCC merchandise and regalia is now back in stock, including our wonderful breast jewel, please click here for details.

With warm fraternal regards and best wishes,

Ric Berman

AQC 134 has been printed, bound, and is now in transit to Lewis Masonic, who will be packing and mailing out this year’s volume. We expect mailings to begin later this week and continue into next. As with last year’s edition, although many, if not most, copies will be mailed out before Christmas, postal volumes are high in mid-December and it is possible, if not probable, that some subscribers may not receive their copy until later in December or in the New Year. We are sorry if there is a slight delay and trust that you will understand.

With Covid still proving problematic, we have looked to optimise and improve our shipping arrangements and copies of AQC bound for our US members will be arriving in bulk in the USA where they will be on-sent via the US Postal Service. Copies for our members in Latin America will be sent by courier or through the various bespoke arrangements that we have put in place in an attempt to avoid the customs and in-country postal issues that have affected us in the past. Our mailing procedures for Europe and Asia have also been refined.

Looking to next year, we have an exciting and varied lecture programme for 2022 which you can discover on our website at www.quatuorcoronati.com, or by clicking here. And we are continuing to add more information to our tercentennial website: 1723constitutions.com.

We will be writing again in January with more details on both.

Many members of QCCC will know of one of the world’s oldest Masonic publishing companies – Lewis Masonic - and its long-standing relationship with Quatuor Coronati. Earlier this month Martin Faulks took up the reigns at Lewis and relocated its business operations to Cambridgeshire. Members of QCCC can receive a 10% discount on all purchases through Lewis Masonic by entering the discount code "fourcrownedmartyrs" when ordering via www.lewismasonic.co.uk.

Another positive to report is that The Shop at Freemasons’ Hall has received a new consignment of QC breast jewels, with more scheduled to arrive shortly, all produced and ribboned in the UK.

Finally, may we wish you and your family a Happy Christmas and a healthy, happy and safe New Year.

With our warm regards

Ric Berman, James Campbell, Andreas Önnerfors & Martin Faulks
