Associate Teaching Professor in Global Finance Anjelina Belakovskaia earned her first gold medal with the U.S. Women 50+ team at the 2026 World Senior Team Chess Championship in Durrës, Albania. After years of competing at the highest level and leading her team on the first board, Belakovskaia helped the USA Women 50+ Team capture the Women's 50+ world title at the 2026 World Senior Team Chess Championship, which attracted 36 teams from 23 countries.

Reflecting on the victory, Belakovskaia said, "Our gold-medal result was truly a team effort. Every half-point mattered, and our success came from resilience, preparation, trust, and support for one another throughout the tournament."

We are proud to celebrate this milestone!

When tensions flare in the Middle East, and the Strait of Hormuz comes under pressure, it is easy to dismiss it as a regional crisis, another distant geopolitical flashpoint. But that framing is dangerously incomplete. What appears localized is, in fact, a real-time stress test of a tightly coupled global system.

As Associate Professor Sophal Ear writes in the latest Faculty Insight, “Crises do not create vulnerabilities. They reveal them.”

The real question is not where the next disruption begins, but whether the global system is built to withstand it.
