South Mountain Community College is celebrating 10 years of community partnership with Elevate Phoenix and the R.I.S.E. (Ready for an Inspired, Successful Education) summer college bridge program!

Elevate Phoenix is a youth organization that empowers students to overcome obstacles by offering the necessary tools for success through mentorship, programs and accredited classes. The organization works with SMCC to specifically provide a critical bridge between high school graduation and higher education through the R.I.S.E. program.

South Mountain Community College’s Behavioral Sciences program is proud to announce a $5,000 award from Banner Health Plan to support curriculum innovation and workforce development initiatives that prepare students for meaningful careers in behavioral health.

This investment reflects a shared commitment to strengthening Arizona’s behavioral health workforce through high-quality, career-focused education. As the demand for trained behavioral health providers continues to grow, the funding will allow the program to expand and enhance learning opportunities that directly align with industry needs and student success outcomes.

Congratulations to South Mountain Community College’s recent graduate, Maricarmen Guzman-Rojas, who became the first student at the college to graduate with the newly created Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Applied English Language Skills this past May.

SMCC adopted this program in the fall of 2024, which was designed to provide English language learners with advanced skills for professional and academic purposes.

As a community health worker with a strong interest in behavioral science, Maricarmen is using the skills she learned in her courses at SMCC to further succeed in her career and help make a difference in her community.
