Behind the Badge: Exploring Public Safety in Local Government
Our club had an incredible opportunity to visit the Scottsdale Police Department, where we gained a deeper understanding of the work happening behind the scenes to ensure public safety in our communities.
A huge thank you to Lt. Chuck Cabrera for his warm welcome, insightful tour, and for taking the time to answer all our questions with rare and valuable perspectives. We also appreciate Jason Devlin for sharing how he transformed Scottsdale’s recruitment and onboarding process as the Training Sergeant of the Professional Development Unit.
It was fascinating to dive into the field training program and leadership development initiatives that equip Scottsdale officers with the skills and mindset to serve with excellence. Their dedication fosters a culture that is integrated with the community, united in purpose, and selfless in action—all to ensure a safer Scottsdale.

Grateful for an incredible behind-the-scenes tour of Tempe Diablo Stadium!

A huge thank you to Jerry Hall from the City of Tempe for giving our Student Chapter an exclusive look at the operations behind one of the Valley’s premier Spring Training facilities. We had the unique opportunity to explore all aspects of the stadium—including the training facilities—and even meet some Los Angeles Angels players along the way!

Spring Training stadiums like Tempe Diablo play a key role in tourism and economic development, bringing visitors, revenue, and energy to our local communities. As future local government leaders, understanding these impacts helps us see the bigger picture of economic and community development in action.

Once again, thank you, Jerry, for the warm welcome and insightful tour!

Belated but worth the recognition!

Back in January, we had the incredible opportunity to sit down for a roundtable lunch with Pat Martel, 102nd President of ICMA - International City/County Management Association, who generously shared her journey in local government and the lessons she’s learned along the way.

Pat’s insights and recommendations on how aspiring local government professionals can make an impact and pay it forward were truly inspiring. Her experience and wisdom served as a reminder of the meaningful work we do and the responsibility we have to uplift the next generation of leaders.

A huge thank you to Pat for taking the time to connect with our members and for her continued dedication to public service!
