Today is World Mountain Day, a UN-designated occasion to raise awareness about mountains and their vital roles in sustaining humanity by providing freshwater, food, livelihoods, and biodiversity. Mountains serve as central pillars of tourism economies thanks to their dramatic landscapes, rich ecosystems, sacred sites, and opportunities for trekking and climbing. Despite their significance, mountains are increasingly threatened by climate change, overdevelopment, and conflict.

Exactly three years ago today, on World Mountain Day 2022 (a coincidence, not planned), I captured this moment during a research trip to Argentina—a reminder of the power and fragility of the world’s great mountain landscapes.

The title of the next webinar aligns with this year’s UN Tourism World Tourism Day theme, ‘Tourism and Sustainable Transformation.’ The webinar will explore tourism's role as a catalyst for positive change in a rapidly changing world, emphasizing a deliberate and inclusive approach that integrates sustainability, resilience, regeneration, and equity into tourism development and decision-making for the benefit of both people and the planet. The panelists will discuss bold, critical, theoretical, methodological, and empirical insights on how tourism can be reimagined toward a more just, sustainable, and resilient future.
