The article highlights an innovative ecotourism initiative that engages visitors in wildlife monitoring and biodiversity research through Earthwatch Expeditions, a citizen-science tourism organization.
CST Director, Gyan Nyaupane, was interviewed for the article.

The actual eco-friendliness of ecotourism varies considerably. One research station in the Peruvian Amazon is out to prove it can bring visitors to the area without disrupting the environment.

Today is World Mountain Day, a UN-designated occasion to raise awareness about mountains and their vital roles in sustaining humanity by providing freshwater, food, livelihoods, and biodiversity. Mountains serve as central pillars of tourism economies thanks to their dramatic landscapes, rich ecosystems, sacred sites, and opportunities for trekking and climbing. Despite their significance, mountains are increasingly threatened by climate change, overdevelopment, and conflict.

Exactly three years ago today, on World Mountain Day 2022 (a coincidence, not planned), I captured this moment during a research trip to Argentina—a reminder of the power and fragility of the world’s great mountain landscapes.

CST faculty presented at the AIANTA Webinar on Recreation and Tourism Planning for Tribal Parks. They presented various tools and frameworks that are beneficial for recreation and tourism planning on public lands and forests, along with some specific examples. Additionally, they explored how Indigenous values and principles can be integrated into the existing frameworks.

Offered in partnership by AIANTA and Arizona State University’s Center for Sustainable Tourism, this online certificate program explores tourism’s impact on Native communities and how to develop long-term, sustainable tourism strategies.

Designed for Indigenous tourism professionals, the program includes seven weekly modules and an optional final project. Each module requires 5–6 hours per week and features Native-focused case studies, interactive content and self-guided learning.

Offered through the School of Community Resources & Development in the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions at Arizona State University, Downtown Phoenix, the program will offer a sustainable tourism curriculum with an emphasis on American Indian Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian....

The Center for Sustainable Tourism (CST) is collaborating with the Bisbee Science Exploration & Research Center (BSERC) for the Ecotourism Feasibility Study.
CST researchers and students are doing surveys and conducting focus groups and interviews with key stakeholders to understand the tourism and economic market context for Bisbee and Southeast Arizona.
