Congratulations to Clinical Associate Professor Elizabeth Trueba and her team on receiving their second grant from the Parkinson's Foundation!

The grant will support the team’s continued efforts to expand community programs for people living with and affected by Parkinson’s disease.

One example is Strengthening Social Connections in Parkinson’s, an event launched in 2025 that connects participants with resources, information and support through in-person activities at the Speech and Hearing Clinic and virtual programming online.

“The Parkinson’s Foundation is proud to support investments that directly reach communities across the country in need of access to meaningful Parkinson’s programs that understand and are equipped to address local needs,” Parkinson’s Foundation President and CEO John L. Lehr said in a news release. “Our community grant programs are truly life-changing for people with PD from all walks of life.”

A new study from autism researcher Joshua Anbar reveals that only about half of Arizona kids recently diagnosed with autism were evaluated in a way that makes them eligible for support outside of school.

Anbar, a clinical assistant professor with the College of Health Solutions and School of Technology for Public Health, spoke with KJZZ Phoenix about how that happens and what it means for kids and families.

Around 3% of U.S children aged eight are diagnosed with autism. But an ASU professor found many of these kids were diagnosed through schools and not in a clinical setting.

A fast-moving strain of bird flu went undetected for roughly three months before health officials identified it, but for the public, the message is "awareness rather than alarm," says lead researcher Matthew Scotch.

The study focuses on D1.1, a genetic variant of the virus that has been driving the global bird flu outbreak of the past several years.

Detecting changes early on can be beneficial for animal and human health alike, says Scotch, an ASU professor and senior associate dean in the College of Health Solutions who also holds an appointment as assistant center director at the ASU Biodesign Institute Center for Environmental Health Engineering.

Extreme heat and dehydration create additional risks for public safety workers in Arizona.

College of Health Solutions population health doctoral student Fota Sall will present one solution to protect first responders this Friday during the inaugural ASU Future of Health and Wellness in Criminal Justice Conference, presented by the ASU Watts College of Public Service & Community Solutions' ASU School of Criminology and Criminal Justice.

The HeatMind project, led by Health Solutions Professor Hassan Ghasemzadeh, is focused on developing a wearable sensor system for firefighters that uses biometric data and AI to identify signs of distress and alert commanders so they can intervene.
