Phoenix College is gearing up for an exciting Fall 2026 semester! 🐻

Faculty and staff kicked things off at Convocation with energy, gratitude, and a shared focus on one thing: helping every Bear thrive. A big part of that momentum comes from our work with Achieving the Dream (ATD), a national network of 300+ community colleges committed to transformation over tradition. Together with expert coaches and peer institutions, PC has built a customized student success framework designed to support students holistically at every stage of their journey.

That framework now has a name and a face: Bear Tracks. 🐾
Rooted in our 1946 College Seal and shaped by real student feedback about what belonging at PC feels like, Bear Tracks guides students through four stages: Embark, Connect, Rise, and Arrive. Along the way, students connect to key experiences like New Student Orientation, Career Tracks, and First Year Experience.

And the data tells us it’s working. Student-reported sense of belonging has climbed from 58% in 2013 to 79% today, proof that intentional, student-first design makes a real difference.

As we open our doors for a new semester, we’re proud of the faculty, staff, and student success leaders driving this work forward, and even more excited for what’s ahead for our students!

Every child deserves the chance to begin the school year feeling prepared, confident and ready to learn. Sometimes, that chance begins long before the first bell rings, when a community comes together to provide not only school supplies, but also encouragement, care and a sense of belonging.

That spirit was on display this July as BHHS Legacy Foundation's annual Backpack Buddies event returned to Phoenix College. During the three-day event, Phoenix College served as the host site and one of many community partners, welcoming more than 2,000 students from Title I schools across Maricopa County and children in foster care.

One of the event's most meaningful features was its personal shopper experience. Rather than receiving a pre-packed backpack, each student was paired with a volunteer who walked alongside them as they selected a backpack, school supplies, clothing, shoes and hygiene items that best fit their needs and preferences. The experience emphasized choice, dignity and encouragement, ensuring every child felt seen, valued and excited for the year ahead.

"It's inspiring to see so many organizations and volunteers come together for students," said Interim President Heather Kruse. "Phoenix College is proud to serve as a place where our community can come together in support of educational opportunity, and we're grateful to play a part in helping students start the school year with confidence."

It's hard to concentrate on coursework when you're hungry. Phoenix College's Bumstead Resource Room exists to make sure that's one less thing students have to worry about, and a new $10,000 gift from the Smart & Final Charitable Foundation will help it support even more students who need it. Supporting students extends beyond the classroom. A $10,000 donation from the Smart & Final Charitable Foundation will strengthen Phoenix College's Bumstead Resource Room, helping students stay on track when unexpected challenges arise."We're proud to partner with Phoenix College to support students through the Bumstead Resource Room," said Tinamarie Squieri of the Smart & Final Charitable Foundation. "We're honored to invest in students through a program that helps them stay focused on achieving their educational goals while removing barriers to accessing food."
