This semester, Cronkite’s Borderlands Project ventured to Tokyo this year and has published a collection of original student work titled “Beyond the Rising Sun: Reporting from Tokyo, Japan.”

The trip provided students the opportunity to work as foreign correspondents, producing multimedia content directed at immigration, policy and cultural identity.

“This was a meaningful experience in that it not only exposed students to a different culture and region of the globe, it provided context and relevance,” said Cronkite School Dean Battinto L. Batts. “I am extremely pleased that our students were able to make this journey and produce such extraordinary work.”

Karess Pringle-Wishner's commitment to ethical and equitable journalism created a college experience rooted in community.

As president of the National Association of Black Journalists at ASU, she created a student-run broadcast that made sense of complex stories and empowered viewers to make informed decisions.

“Cronkite prepares students for all sides of media,” she said. “The industry is evolving, and Cronkite doesn’t just box you into one lane. It teaches you how to move forward in journalism.”

Karess will be recognized as one of the spring Cronkite Spirit honorees at Thursday's convocation.

ASU Online student Bailey Wazak discovered an unexpected passion at the Cronkite School and hasn’t looked back since.

“I knew I wanted to major in something business related,” she said. “I learned about the digital audiences program, chose it as my minor, but ended up loving it so much I changed it to my major.”

Once Wazak realized she could combine analytics and creativity, she knew she was on the right path.

This spring, Wazak will graduate with her bachelor’s in digital strategy and audience engagement, and will be recognized as one of Cronkite’s Outstanding Undergraduates.

Abby Rojas is graduating with bachelor’s degrees in psychology and digital audiences, made possible by ASU Online and the Starbucks College Achievement Plan.

"The Starbucks College Achievement Plan has allowed me to earn my undergraduate degree at no cost while saving for graduate school,” she said. “I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity. It has made it possible for me to prepare for the next step while completing my degree.”

While studying and working at her local Starbucks, Rojas managed her church’s social media marketing. This allowed her to make the most of ASU Online’s flexibility and apply coursework to her career in real time.

"Managing social media for my church showed me that understanding people is just as important as understanding content," she said.

After graduation, Rojas plans to continue her studies at Colorado State University in pursuit of a doctorate in occupational therapy.

What started as a childhood bonding activity with his dad, quickly turned into a lifelong passion that led Eric Matsumoto toward a career in sports journalism.

Matsumoto came to Cronkite because he knew it had the most to offer his career. In addition to studying and serving as a Cronkite ambassador, Matsumoto spent his time producing sporting events ranging from baseball to water polo.

“There are very few places in the country that have the number of teams and events Phoenix has. When you combine that with coverage opportunities and professional instruction, Cronkite simply made the most sense,” he said.

Matsumoto will be recognized as one of the spring Cronkite Spirit honorees at convocation.

His next step will lead him back home to San Jose, California, where he’ll work for the San Jose Giants.

Graduation doesn't always mean goodbye. Accelerated master’s program student Serenity Reynolds is collecting her bachelor’s degree this month, but she will soon return to pursue her Master of Mass Communication this fall.

Xavier Brathwaite is just days away from becoming a “double devil,” having earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Cronkite.

Cronkite and Barrett The Honors College student Sam McGee is leaving his mark at the intersection of journalism and law in his Second Amendment thesis.

Praised for his exemplary and original journalism, McGee received the Barrett Outstanding Researcher Award and Barrett Downtown’s Gold Standard Award for Best Thesis.

“Sam came to his thesis on Second Amendment jurisprudence with chops he had developed at Cronkite,” stated Alex Trimble Young, the associate director of BRIDGS and honors faculty fellow at Barrett.

McGee’s work regarding the Second Amendment won't stop at graduation. This fall, he plans to attend the UCLA School of Law, where he will further advance his research.

Grace Johnson knew what she wanted the minute she stepped foot inside Cronkite.

“The tour guide told us that they were sending students to the 2024 Paris Olympics,” she said. “My eyes immediately lit up and locked with my mom. I knew I wasn’t going to get these kinds of experiences in the real world anywhere else.”

While at Cronkite, Johnson focused on combining her love of creative writing with her passion for sports.

Several years and many press passes later, Johnson can look back on a resume filled with high-profile sporting events, including the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the NCAA Women’s Final Four and, yes, the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Johnson will be recognized as one of Cronkite’s Outstanding Undergraduate Students.

Hailing from Anchorage, Alaska, double Cronkite grad and Barrett, The Honors College student Madison Knutson is ready to return home with her master’s degree and launch her career as a broadcast producer.

Despite the 3,600 miles separating Anchorage from Phoenix, Knutson knew the education offered at Cronkite was a unique chance to broaden her horizons and learn something new.

“The opportunities that I’ve received at Cronkite made the move worthwhile,” she said. “I got to experience and learn more about a new state and city. It might be hard to leave your hometown, but you get unique chances to grow as a journalist.”
