After being expelled from high school, Alister Martin worried he might never go to college. Today, the Harvard Medical School-trained physician is the newly appointed Commissioner of the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
It all started with a second chance at Rutgers and the support of ODASIS, where Dr. Martin (’10) said he was given the foundation to reach his dreams.

Game 3 at the Garden has a Rutgers connection. 🏀

“You can feel the buzz, feel the vibe.”

That’s how Rutgers Hall of Famer and former Knick Hollis Copeland, Rutgers College ’78, remembers Madison Square Garden.

He and fellow Rutgers Hall of Famer James Bailey, Livingston College ’79, helped make history in Scarlet before both went on to play for the New York Knicks.

As the Knicks return home for Game 3 of the NBA Finals, the former Scarlet Knights are reflecting on New York basketball, Rutgers pride and the energy only the Garden can bring.

From the Banks to the Garden, this Finals moment runs through Rutgers.

For Shriya Srinivasan, this year’s SAS Convocation student speaker, that journey began as an out-of-state student learning how to build community far from family.

Her message to graduates, especially those who once wondered where they belonged, is simple: you are not alone. The people, places, and moments that make Rutgers feel like home can find you in their own time.

As Shriya prepares to take the stage, she carries with her the friends who became her people, the family who supported her from afar, and every reminder that home can be something you grow into.

Then he stood at SHI Stadium as the outgoing president of the Rutgers University Student Assembly, representing the entire Class of 2026, and turned to her in Spanish.

“Ma, thank you for all your sacrifices. Despite every challenge, we always keep moving forward.” ❤️
