The Nationality & Heritage Rooms celebrate the cultures of ethnic groups that settled in the Pittsburgh region. The Nationality and Heritage Rooms at the University of Pittsburgh celebrate the cultures of ethnic groups that settled in the Pittsburgh region. The thirty-one rooms located in the Cathedral of Learning on Pitt’s Oakland campus are in

spirational spaces where visitors experience the rich heritage of communities who created them. Each Room commemorates cultural heritages of the communities who supported and planned their construction, and most of the rooms are used as classrooms. The conception of the Rooms originated in 1926 when the ground was broken for the construction of the gothic-style Cathedral of Learning which is forty-two stories in height. The University sought to engage the diversity of communities living in the region by inviting them to represent themselves through constructing a classroom. The first eighteen Rooms encircling the Commons Room on the main floor were completed between 1938 and 1957. The other thirteen Rooms began construction in 1987, with the most recent room dedicated in 2019. To learn more about how to experience the Nationality and Heritage Rooms, visit us on our website.
