For Starr Edwards, commencement was both a return and a new beginning.

Starr first graduated from CCAC in 2018 with a degree in general studies. Afterward, she worked as a home healthcare provider for patients with mental disabilities, but she eventually decided to return to school to pursue her passion for medical laboratory work. Edwards attended Bidwell Training Center’s chemical laboratory technician program, but without the credentials and certifications needed for hospital lab positions, she was unable to enter the field.

CCAC’s Medical Laboratory Technician program offered a path forward as the only comparable accredited program in the area. Without that local option, Edwards said she would not have been able to pursue the career.

Edwards plans to work in the field for a few years before continuing her education, completing a bachelor’s degree, and becoming a medical laboratory scientist.

Congratulations, Starr!

Taylor Harvey’s path to commencement was anything but traditional.

A Wilkinsburg native, first-generation college student and nontraditional learner, Harvey did not always see himself as a strong student. After high school, he felt directionless, but ultimately decided that education was the path to a better life and to developing his creative talents.

At CCAC, Harvey found his footing. He excelled academically, joined the Honors Program, participated on a winning team in the college’s Pitch Contest and earned an ADDY marketing award. Despite his successes, Taylor’s final semester nearly derailed his progress.

After losing his job and facing housing insecurity, Harvey considered dropping out. He credits CCAC support services, including Resource Navigators, with helping him access the resources he needed to stay enrolled and graduate.

Students like Taylor embody the immense dedication and persistence found across CCAC—and we will be proud to see him walk with his classmates this Thursday at CCAC’s 2026 Commencement Exercises.
