Philanthropy Forum at the University of Pittsburgh

Philanthropy Forum at the University of Pittsburgh The Philanthropy Forum at GSPIA is a learning and teaching laboratory that explores the rich and instructive history of philanthropy in Pittsburgh.

About the GSPIA Philanthropy Forum

The concept and the practice of philanthropy continue to evolve. Greater access to needs and the means to meet them continue to open the activity and the aspirations of philanthropy to millions of participants globally. The scale of giving continues to grow, and with it, new questions about philanthropy’s impact and intentions. At the University of Pittsburgh,

GSPIA’s Philanthropy Forum offers a university-based setting to explore these dynamics. Through teaching, practice-based research and exchange with practitioners and thought leaders, GSPIA’s Philanthropy Forum examines the innovations and implications arising from the field. The Forum highlights philanthropic advances originated in Pittsburgh, tapping the city’s rich philanthropic tradition as a learning laboratory to understand past progress, current practice and future developments. Core activities of the Forum include a graduate level course on Philanthropy and Society, case studies, teaching tools and research developed from applied knowledge, a speaker’s series and additional outreach and engagement. As a virtual “center” or thematic learning platform, the Forum seeks to:

* Create educational opportunities through core activities and university wide synergies
* Facilitate exchanges and relationships between practitioners and the university
* Complement GSPIA’s strengths and Pittsburgh’s philanthropic heritage by connecting local, national, and global issues and practitioners
o Create practice based teaching and learning tools

The Philanthropy Forum is also pleased to share full presentations from its annual speaker series and conferences, including:

A legal secretary in Brooklyn told nobody - probably not even her husband - about the $10 million she had saved over her career as a secretary. In her will, she gave it all away.

A frugal woman from Brooklyn, who rode the subway to work at one law firm for 67 years, left millions for students at Henry Street Settlement and Hunter College.
