We were thrilled to host students from Thomas Jefferson High School on Wednesday! These students were able to sit in on one our Shaping of the Modern World classes and get a glimpse of all Duquesne has to offer. This is a highlight of our academic year!

This morning, New York Times best-selling author Mary Roach spoke with Duquesne students about her experiences writing multiple books, ethics in scientific research, and finding inspiration for new research. Thank you Mary for the fantastic talk, and special thanks to our department's Dr. John Mitcham for the introductory address.

Dr. Taylor's Intro to Museums class is studying art museums. On Tuesday they went rogue from the syllabus to visit the Art for August exhibit and a live painting Q&A with artist Cue Perry at Gumberg Library.

Our speaker this year is Dr. Mikki Brock, Head of the Department of History at Washington & Lee University and a leading scholar of the religious and gender history of early modern Europe. Dr. Brock’s lecture will be “‘Half-Hangit Maggie’: The Curious Case of Scotland’s Most Infamous Execution.”

The event is free and open to the public, and is co-sponsored by the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts and the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies.

Greetings from Providence!

Last week, present and former Duquesne History students and faculty attended The Work of Revolution, the joint conference hosted by NCPH and the American Association for State and Local History!

Graduate student Olivia Wanat presented Historic Suburbia: Historic Preservation in Pittsburgh's Suburbs at the poster session. Alumnus Griffin Nordstrom paneled the session Experiment to Practice: Emerging Methods in Public History, and we recognize faculty member Dr. Stephanie Gray for the feature of her recently published work Restoring America: Historic Preservation and the New Deal University of Massachusetts Press

We're thrilled to have Dukes at one of the largest public history gatherings in the country!

Piers Berry is a second year Public History Gradaute Student and our 2027 Vardy International Research and Study Grant recipient!

Piers interned at Marsh's Library in Dublin, Ireland this summer. Marsh's Library is the oldest public library in all of Ireland and was first established in 1707 by Archbishop of Dublin Narcissus Marsh. While working at the library, he worked in visitor services. His primary responsibilities were to process ticket sales, introduce visitors to the library, monitor visitors to ensure the preservation of the books, answer visitor questions about the library, and process sales in the gift shop.

On Saturday we held a reception for the alumni for our Graduate Program. Alumni from both the MA in History and MA in Public History were able to connect with each other, faculty past and present.

Our MA in History program has been apart of Duquesne since 1911 and our Public History program started in 1979, resulting in over 700 alumni!

Thank you all who came!
