The Forensic Science and Law Maymester group is making unforgettable memories across Scotland!

From exploring public policy at the Scottish Parliament to uncovering medical history at Surgeon’s Hall and hearing Edinburgh’s hidden stories on a ghost tour, students experienced the many layers of Scotland’s rich history and culture. Visits to the National Museum of Scotland and Edinburgh Castle served as a powerful reminder that the past still speaks — through architecture, artifacts, and the stories we choose to remember.

Students also explored the National Gallery of Art, Dean Village, and Calton Hill while enjoying great meals at Frankenstein and Howies.

Their journey continued in Glasgow, where they gained another perspective on policing, public history, and museum education. And perhaps the most unforgettable experience? Squeezing onto the world’s smallest — and most claustrophobia-inducing — tube ride!

The FSL Maymester group is experiencing an unforgettable study abroad journey through London, exploring the intersections of history, law, and science.

Students visited the Natural History Museum and Science Museum and stepped into the world of Sherlock Holmes. They also saw the Horse Guards, Buckingham Palace, and the Bow Street Museum—each stop adding a new layer to their understanding of law, culture, and forensic history.

Their experience continued with a visit to the Tower of London and the UK Supreme Court, where they gained firsthand insight into sites central to British legal history. The group also toured a historic cathedral, a former prison, and participated in a crime history tour that brought the evolution of justice systems to life.

Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Dr. Amin Ghorbanpour has been selected for the prestigious NASA Glenn Faculty Fellowship Program at NASA's Glenn Research Center.

This summer, he’ll conduct advanced research in hybrid electric aircraft propulsion systems alongside NASA researchers—bringing aerospace engineering directly back to Duquesne classrooms, labs, and student research opportunities.

“Opportunities like this expose students to cutting-edge research and emerging technologies being developed at organizations like NASA,” he said.

Dr. Ghorbanpour’s work focuses on improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions in next-generation aircraft through energy optimal control strategies for hybrid electric engines.

Through this fellowship, Duquesne students will gain greater access to real-world engineering applications, hands-on research experiences, and future opportunities in aerospace and sustainable energy systems.

From classroom labs to a career in clinical research, Melanie Tanis (BS Biochemistry/MS Forensic Science and Law ’26) is turning her passion for forensic science into impact. After earning two degrees through the Forensic Science and Law 4+1 program, Melanie is beginning her next chapter as an Associate Scientist II at QPS Holdings, where she’ll focus on method development to help improve patient care.

Through hands-on research, internships with the ATF, study abroad experiences and mentorship from faculty like Matthew Regentin, She built the confidence and skills to succeed in the field.

“Professor Regentin was always there to help—whether it was research, internships or career advice. Having someone who’s invested in your success makes a big difference,” she said.

As she prepares for her next chapter, Melanie reflects on how much she’s grown at Duquesne—not just academically, but personally. She credits the faculty and her cohort for much of that growth.

“I got to meet scientists I really look up to. It showed me what’s possible.”

Read Melanie’s story and see how the Forensic Science and Law program prepares students for meaningful careers. https://www.duq.edu/academics/colleges-and-schools/science-and-engineering/news/finding-her-path-in-forensic-science.php
