Welcome New Faculty!

The University of Pittsburgh Office of the Provost and the Teaching Center invite all new full-time and part-time faculty, faculty who are new to Pitt, and faculty transitioning into teaching roles to New Faculty Orientation on Thursday, Aug. 20! The program introduces teaching and resource support services, institutional partners, and opportunities for cross-campus collaboration.

For Your Convenience: As new faculty appointments are confirmed, instructors will automatically begin receiving "Teaching Center Today" (the Teaching Center's newsletter publication) to ensure that they get news, resources, and announcements from the Teaching Center to support their on-boarding experience at Pitt!

Diving Into the Maker Movement: In June, the second cohort of the Faculty Experiential Learning and Technology (FELT) grant explored emerging technologies in the University of Pittsburgh Library System's media labs and our @ Open Lab at Hillman as part of a three-day orientation experience. Throughout the academic year, they will explore ways to integrate 3D printing, virtual reality, and other makerspace tools into their curriculum in support of the grant's goal: to fully redesign their course assignments in a way that incorporates hands-on learning and maker tools. Students get confused when AI-use expectations shift from course to course and section to section (Fu, et al., 2026; Rix 2026; Tsao 2025). While there’s no substitute for talking to your students, a system of clear icons can help guide your thinking and clarify your stance on AI use in your classroom. So, consider using icons to help you clarify your stance on AI use in your course.

Instructors have the option of downloading our icon guide and incorporating AI-use labels like required, permitted, restricted, and prohibited into the syllabus to establish an early understanding of your stance on AI use.

After the term is over, use AI to help answer the question – what actually happened in the course? This practical AI Assisted Post-Term Reflection Guide walks you through using AI to synthesize the data you now have.

We are reaching high... literally!

Our learning environments team is working with University of Pittsburgh Facilities in 125 Frick Fine Arts Building to install a new 4K LED wall display that measures 15' x 9' and has Dolby Atmos surround sound.

This is the FIRST installation of its kind in a Pitt instructional learning space.

The project is funded by the Office of the Provost's Learning Space Management Committee and will be ready for the Fall 2026 term. Congratulations to the University of Pittsburgh for this significant classroom upgrade!
