During Homecoming Weekend, the School of Education welcomed alumni back to campus to celebrate the Curriculum Center's 25th anniversary, reconnect with familiar faces, and reminisce about a space that has inspired students and professionals working with children for 25 years!

From puppets and children's books to hands-on activities that bring learning to life, the Curriculum Center has been part of so many stories.

School of Education Assistant Professor and Board Certified Behavior Analyst® (BCBA®), Dr. Reva Mathieu, was awarded the Charles Henry Leach II Fund for Duquesne University, for her project, "Building Advocacy Skills and Capacity for Underprivileged Families of Children with Autism.

This grant brings together graduate students in the M.S.ED. ABA, ABA Course Sequence for the BCBA® Exam, Ph.D. School Psychology & Psy.D. School Psychology programs, university faculty and clinicians at Keystone ABA in Pittsburgh to co-deliver a family advocacy training program for families of young children with autism, grounded in a compassionate care approach that centers respect, trust and empathy in every interaction.

“This project is especially meaningful to me because it brings together so many things I care deeply about: compassionate care in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), family empowerment, advocacy, and preparing future professionals to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the families they serve. This collaboration allows us to connect university learning with meaningful community-based work and, most importantly, support families of autistic children in building advocacy skills and having a stronger voice in the systems that serve their children.”-Dr. Reva Mathieu

Dr. Reva Mathieu's innovative project exemplifies how faculty-led research grounded in compassionate care prepares graduate students to make an impact — both in their professional development and in the lives of the families and children they serve. Her ongoing work on compassionate care within ABA continues to shape how the field builds trust and respect with those it serves, and this project extends that commitment directly into the community. We look forward to this collaboration unfolding and are excited for the impact it will make in the community.

Congratulations to Dr. Chance Wideman, ED.D in Educational Leadership 2025, on receiving the Distinguished Dissertation Award, recognizing exceptional, impactful scholarly work produced through doctoral dissertation research.

Dr. Wideman’s dissertation explores the experiences of children whose fathers were incarcerated and how those experiences can shape attachment, family relationships, and development into adulthood. Drawing from his own experiences, he approached the work not only as a researcher, but as a husband, father, educator, and DEI professional committed to creating space for stories that are often overlooked.

“Being both the researcher and a participant made the process challenging, but also incredibly rewarding. There were moments when the research required me to revisit parts of my own story that were difficult to examine. At the same time, it gave me a greater sense of responsibility to handle each participant’s story with care. As a Black man raised in Pittsburgh, and now as a husband, father, educator, and DEI professional, I wanted the study to create space for experiences that are often overlooked or reduced to statistics.” -Dr. Chance Wideman

From personal experience to doctoral research, Dr. Wideman’s journey reflects how our Ed.D. graduates use their work to create impact far beyond Duquesne. From his time in this program, he learned key skills that he is integrating in his life today, and with the help of others at Duquesne, was able to grow his experiences to influence the next generation.

The way a school day is structured can shape more than a student’s schedule. It can influence how they learn, engage, and experience school. That’s where Dr. Tammy Hughes’ expertise comes in.

As a Professor in our School Psychology, licensed psychologist and Board-Certified specialist in School Psychology, Dr. Hughes understands how the fundamental strategies and teachings learned in schools exemplify what it means to create meaningful learning experiences, empower students to strive for excellence, and foster empathy in all that she does.

“Later start times also are defined as a form of block scheduling, which has crucial benefits for students, including improving mood, lowering obesity, increasing attendance and resulting in fewer disciplinary referrals.”

Through her expertise, Dr. Hughes continues to help educators, students, and communities think differently about what students need to succeed and how meaningful changes within schools can make a profound impact.
