The CCAC Office of Military and Veterans Services would like to take a moment to reflect on Memorial Day weekend and the meaning of this holiday. Although it marks the unofficial start of summer for most of us, Memorial Day has a much more somber and poignant origin – it was founded as a day meant to remember, honor, and mourn the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Our office would like to take this opportunity to express our deep gratitude for the countless sacrifices of all of the past and present members of the U.S. Armed Forces, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice. We hope you find some time to reflect on the meaning of this holiday and we wish you safe, reverent Memorial Day Weekend.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Office of Military and Veterans Services was a busy place; military-affiliated students would come in to our offices to discuss educational benefits, certify their enrollment with the VA, hang out in our lounges, or even just chat with our staff. Of course, everything has now shifted online so we thought we would take this opportunity to introduce ourselves (in case you haven’t met us in person already!) and put a face to our names. We hope you have a great Spring Semester!

As we all know, our veteran / military students bring a variety of talents and skills that help to further support the importance and impact of diversity, equity, and inclusion on our campuses, both in-person and virtually. We are pleased to present the creative works of some of CCAC’s veterans!

The CCAC Office of Military & Veterans Services would like to thank veterans for your service to our country. We are grateful for your sacrifices and protecting our freedoms.

To celebrate the service of some of our CCAC veteran / military students, faculty, staff, and their loved ones, we are honored to share a Virtual Veterans Honor Wall.

The VA has compiled a list of nationally available Veterans Day discounts, meals, or other ways businesses and organizations want to give back to Veterans. These Veterans Day discounts, free meals and other programs are being shared so that Veterans, their families, caregivers, and survivors are aware of all resources available to them.

Due to COVID-19, some organizations are now offering discounts to Veterans all the time instead of their regular Veterans Day discounts.

This Veterans Day 2020 discounts list will be updated as we learn of more nationally available ways organizations want to give to Veterans.

Veterans Leadership Program in collaboration with Veterans Breakfast Club, Duquesne Office for Veteran and Military Students, Shepherd's Heart Fellowship & Veteran's Home, and Friends of Danang will be hosting a Virtual Veterans Day PGH event. In this unsettled year, Veterans Day stands as a powerful reminder of our founding national ideal, E Pluribus Unum, “Out of Many, One.” This virtual Veterans Day program will honor this motto by bringing our region together to celebrate the diversity of our veterans and military community. Join as we thank those who’ve served our country to secure America’s promise of liberty and justice for all.

The featured speaker is H. Lamont Gourdine, a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and member of the Academy Football team.
