Today is 🌍 Intellectual Property Day, a chance to recognize the ideas, creativity, and hard work that drive innovation forward.

Behind every breakthrough is someone turning an idea into something real, and intellectual property helps make that possible by protecting those ideas and helping them grow into impact.

A big shoutout to the OIE staff who make this work happen every day, supporting innovators as they move from concept to reality and helping build the systems that keep ideas moving forward!

We’re excited to welcome Peter Sobotta as an Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR) focused on Software & AI at the University of Pittsburgh.

Peter brings more than 20 years of experience building and scaling data-first software companies — from bootstrapping a startup to $15M ARR to leading a venture-backed company that raised over $15M. His expertise spans AI-native product development, data infrastructure, predictive analytics, and marketplace platforms.

In addition to his entrepreneurial background, Peter served for a decade as a U.S. Navy Supply Corps Officer, where he led large-scale logistics operations and enterprise software deployments.

Originally from Central Pennsylvania, Peter maintains strong ties to the region and will support Pitt innovators both virtually and on-site. We’re excited for the perspective and experience he’ll bring to our startup community.

Welcome Peter! 🚀

Chronic pain is complex and treatment shouldn’t be one-size-fits-all.

Developed by Ajay Wasan within Pitt Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine and led by Indrani Halder, Personalized Pain Treatment™ uses machine learning to predict how individual patients will respond to different pain therapies based on treatment data from 100,000 patients, helping clinicians tailor care to each person. By bringing precision to pain management, this approach has the potential to improve outcomes and reduce trial-and-error in treatment.

We’re proud to celebrate this team on Startup Signing Day and the future of personalized care they’re advancing!

Turning Pitt research into real-world impact 🧠

What if we could help extend relief for patients with treatment-resistant depression?

Rebecca Price in Pitt Psychiatry has developed a cognitive training app designed to build on the rapid effects of to reinforce positive self-associations (i.e. improve self-image) during the window of neuroplasticity created by intravenous ketamine, helping patients delay return of depressive symptoms.

This innovation has been optioned by Taja Health Technologies PBC, which is working to bring the technology from the lab into real-world clinical use.

We’re excited to highlight Pitt’s growing community of researchers and industry partners translating discoveries into solutions that make a difference.
