Even as Kyaien Conner anxiously awaited to hear if she’d be named dean of Pitt’s School of Social Work, she was — in her role as director of the University’s Center on Race and Social Problems (CRSP) — fully immersed in serious mid-summer resume-enhancing activity in another country.
“We were able to take our first cohort of social work students on a global excursion through our program, so we brought nine bachelor’s in social work and master’s in social work students to South Africa for two weeks,” she explained. “We spent some time in Durban and then also in Johannesburg. We’ve been building relationships with institutions there.”
Students were able to shadow Pitt social work faculty and social workers running community organizations and areas they’re interested in learning more about, “to really kind of see what it’s like to be a social worker in another country.” Read more of Dean Conner's interview in the University Times: https://ow.ly/h2VF50ZHofa

Welcome to our new faculty members!

The Pitt School of Social Work is happy to welcome four new faculty members this fall:

Dr. Cathy Breneman, Director of Practicum Education and Assistant Professor. She earned her PhD in Social Work and BS in Psychology from University of Pittsburgh and MSW from West Virginia University. She also completed a Post-Master’s Certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy at the University of Pittsburgh and continues advanced study in Bowen Theory through Bowen Center for the Study of the Family.

Dr. Amy Herschell, Principal Investigator, Child Welfare Education and Research Programs. She is also a Clinical Professor in the School of Social Work where her clinical interests focus on collaboratively developing high quality, community-based care for children and their families. She has served as the Principal or Co-Principal Investigator for several federally funded grants (e.g., NIMH, CDC, SAMHSA, HRSA) and has published extensively on topics related to child welfare, workforce development, children’s behavioral health, implementation science, and evidence-based practices.

Dr. Sarah Porter, Assistant Professor. She is a community-engaged behavioral health services researcher and critical suicidologist. Her research examines how community-led models of behavioral crisis services, such as peer support, provide essential alternatives for communities disproportionately harmed by systems meant to serve them.

Dr. Shannon Power, Assistant Professor. She earned her BSW, MSW, and PhD from the University of Georgia. Eradicating health disparities is at the heart of her research into dementia care navigation, focusing on barriers in rural and medically under-served communities.

Congratulations! Emeritus Associate Professor Ray Engel's research textbook, The Practice of Research in Social Work (with Russell Schutt), has now had its 5th edition published by SAGE College Publishing.
The Practice of Research in Social Work positions research as an essential tool for effective, ethical social work practice—not just a set of methods to master. Rather than treating research as abstract or disconnected from the field, this Fifth Edition shows students how to evaluate interventions, programs, and policies using real examples drawn from social work research and practice.
