"We know rainfall generally is expected to get more intense as the Earth warms up over time because there’s more moisture in the atmosphere, and so that water has to go somewhere,” Gordon Hamish, associate professor of chemical engineering, told Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

That added atmospheric moisture also triggers microbursts — rapid, localized downpours caused by colliding updrafts and downdrafts.
