Asian Studies Center at the University of Pittsburgh The Asian Studies Center (ASC) of the University Center for International Studies (UCIS) promotes research, teaching, and learning about Asia.

The Asian Studies Center is Western Pennsylvania’s regional resource for research, teaching, learning and building connections about Asia. Through 106 affiliated faculty with expertise spanning the academic disciplines, we foster multidisciplinary academic programming and community engagement. Founded in 1969, the Center is widely recognized as one of the best and most comprehensive in the country for programs in Chinese and Japanese language and culture studies, with growing strengths in Indian and Korean studies.

Meet Ashlyn, the NCTA student worker!

“What drew me to the Asian Studies Center was actually a friend of mine who worked here before — she always talked about what an amazing group of people this is, and that, combined with my love of learning about Asia, made this internship a perfect fit for me.”

Some Fun Facts About Ashlyn:

• She loves diving into the music and the history of Asian cultures

• She studied abroad in both Japan and Korea

• Her favorite thing she discovered in Japan was the yuzu lemon soda from 7-Eleven — she still thinks about it

• Her Chinese zodiac animal is the rooster

Meet Hannah, our Communications student worker!
 
“My interest in Asian studies stems from a desire to better understand my heritage as a third-generation Korean American. In my position with the ASC, I hope to encourage other college students to explore their own cultural backgrounds and appreciate the histories and cultures of other communities!”
 
Some Fun Facts About Hannah:
 
• She loves origami, she learned how to make paper cranes in 5th grade and never stopped!
 
• Her favorite Korean foods are 미역국 (seaweed soup), 갈비 (galbi), and 만두 (mandu)
 
• She loves to read about Asian folklore, her favorite myth retelling is Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim
 
• She hopes to study abroad in South Korea next year!

Meet Stephanie, our Screenshot Festival student worker!
 
“From a young age, I have always had an interest in Asian culture, including the rich history behind different countries and cultures, as well as their traditions and customs. Learning about the certificate that encourages and celebrates students who want to learn more about Asian culture seemed like a perfect opportunity for me to explore that interest further.”
 
Some Fun Facts:
 
• She has been a big Bollywood fan ever since she was in elementary school. She and her grandma would watch Bollywood or South Asian series together every night before bed
 
• She became a fan of kdramas, cdramas and media from other countries too like Japan, Thailand and Taiwan in middle school!
 
• She visited West Asia back in her senior year of high school. She loved seeing parts of the world the media usually doesn’t cover
 
• She visited this past South Korea this past summer and studied there for six weeks! She also made her way to Japan for a weekend
 
• Her dream country to visit would be China or Thailand

• She studied abroad in Kobe, Japan last fall and spring semester
• She has been to 17 prefectures in Japan
• She loves watching anime and has a goal of watching all the movies from Studio Ghibli
• She is interested in East Asian fashion and would love to buy a lo**ta outfit someday
• Her favorite Asian dishes are K-BBQ, Chinese hot pot, and chicken saag
