The University of Wisconsin-Platteville is a hub of innovation and creativity for the tri-state region. With nearly 200 expert faculty and staff in the STEM fields and more than 3,200 STEM students, combined with cutting-edge facilities and equipment, UW-Platteville is the best resource to support budding entrepreneurs throughout the region. Innovation has always been at the core of what we do—in

fact, UW-Platteville has the most intellectual property invention disclosures of any University of Wisconsin System comprehensive campus (67 in the past five years!). We are home to one of the largest makerspaces in the Midwest.

We’d like to show off more students and their projects!

As the semester winds down, the HFIC is as busy as ever. Students across the space are working to finish senior design prototypes, test crawling robots for Mechanisms and Machines, and start new sewing and creative projects before summer begins.

The end of the semester always brings a mix of long hours, experimentation, problem-solving, and exciting final pushes toward completed work. It’s been great seeing students continue to explore new ideas and build their skills through hands-on projects.

What are you trying to finish before summer arrives?

This week we'd like to highlight the people that make the HFIC what it is!

Makers across the space have been busy designing, building, experimenting, and creating some incredible projects. Their creativity and willingness to learn are what make the Huff Center such a dynamic place to be.

Keep up the great work as the semester nears the end!

This week has been crazy busy in the best possible way!

STEM Week 2026 is wrapping up today, and we’d like to share a few highlights. Thursday was the STEM Expo, a chance for students of all ages to explore and learn about everything STEM from robotics to environmental studies and more.

It’s also a great opportunity for university students to showcase what they’ve been learning and working on this semester. We had demos featuring drone blimps, SAE vehicles, seed bomb making, and many other student projects.

What was your favorite part of the week?

No two days at the Huff Family Innovation Center look the same!

This week alone, students explored everything from UV printing and laser cutting to manual machining and electronics assembly. Others spent time measuring, refining, and preparing materials for the next phase of their projects.

Different tools. Different disciplines. Different goals.
All happening in one shared space built to support hands-on learning and creative problem solving.

What will you make next?

The students are leaving, but we will still be here!

As the semester moves into spring break, projects at the Huff Family Innovation Center are still moving forward. Students have been busy prototyping, building, and refining ideas across the space, and we’re excited to keep supporting that work throughout the week.

The HFIC will remain open with adjusted hours:
Monday–Friday | 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Have a great break, Pioneers!

Today, the HFIC got to host Professor Kristina Fields's Let's Go Roundabouts presentation for STEM Career Exploration Day.

Professor Fields lectures for the civil and environmental engineering department of the College of EMS. This time around, she introduced the students to roundabouts: how they work, why they are used, and the engineering considerations that go into designing them.

Opportunities like this help students explore potential career paths and see how engineering impacts the world around them!

The future of engineering and technology is already hard at work:

Recently, HFIC hosted Girls Who Code, giving students the chance to build coding skills in a hands-on environment. We also supported ASME’s NASA HUNCH presentations, where student teams presented research projects developed over months of dedication and problem-solving.

Opportunities like these help the next generation develop a passion for learning and making and we're proud to support them in their journey!

The HFIC supports more than just one type of project and one type of user.

This week alone students and community members alike were experimenting, refining, and bringing ideas one step closer to reality. From student coursework to independent community projects, the range of work happening here reflects the accessibility of the space.

Different projects. Different goals. One shared space built for making.

There’s no single way to use the Huff Family Innovation Center.

With over 200 pieces of tooling and equipment available, every project and every user can approach the space in a way that fits their specific needs and ideas.

This week alone, our laser cutters were hard at work supporting SAE Aero and structural engineering students as they created RC plane skeletons and functional, scaled-down bridges. Our 3D printers helped both the Formula SAE team and a local bird enthusiast prototype parts for a race car and custom bird feeders. Meanwhile, our textile equipment was busy helping prototype multiple versions of tags for a local library’s puppets.

What project can we help you bring to life?
