UW-Platteville College of EMS attended the Wisconsin Drives Manufacturing Summit at Lambeau Field this week, where we shared our distance engineering and senior design programs and connected with industry partners across the state.

We especially loved reconnecting with alumni, and the conversations - paired with sessions on how industry is leveraging AI, adapting challenges with PFAS, and workforce development - offered valuable insight into how Wisconsin businesses are evolving and how we can continue to support their talent needs.

Dean Philip Parker and Assistant Dean Jessica Fick had the opportunity to tour the Polaris Off Road product development facility and hear from several University of Wisconsin-Platteville alumni who are thriving in leadership roles across the organization.

One thing that immediately stood out was the rider-driven culture. Helmets were visible at workstations throughout the facility because employees are encouraged to get out, ride, and experience the products they help create. That passion for the customer and the product was evident in every conversation.

One of the highlights of Dean Philip Parker and Assistant Dean Jessica Fick’s recent trip to Minneapolis was bringing together 18 alumni, 4 faculty members, and 17 students from civil and environmental engineering.

The students were in the Twin Cities participating in an infrastructure tour through the NSF-sponsored SPACES program, and the alumni gathering provided a great opportunity to connect Pioneers across generations.

What stood out most was the lasting impact of the relationships built at University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Whether alumni had graduated two years ago or 40 years ago, the connections they formed as students remained strong.

Dean Philip Parker and Assistant Dean Jessica Fick visited Federal Premium Ammunition. It was fascinating to see a manufacturing process on a product that has existed for decades, but continues to evolve through innovation, testing, and continuous improvement.

They also appreciated hearing what they look for in engineers: initiative, curiosity, the confidence to ask questions, and the humility to admit when they don't know something. Just as importantly, they emphasized the value of understanding how organizations create value for their customers and the cost of making a product.

Their perspective strongly reinforced the entrepreneurial mindset we are cultivating through Kern Entrepreneurship Education Network - helping students connect technical skills with curiosity, the ability to make connections, and value creation.

Thank you to the Federal Premium team for sharing your experiences and insights with us.

Dean Philip Parker and Assistant Dean Jessica Fick had a great visit with alumna Heather Dotzauer, ’05, chemistry, at Labcorp, where she is putting her chemistry degree to work making a difference and helping people every day.

It was fascinating to see rows of mass spectrometers used to analyze samples for everything from toxicology testing to medical diagnostics. They especially enjoyed hearing how Heather and her colleagues are driven by the knowledge that people rely on their results to be both fast and accurate.

Thank you, Heather, for sharing your career journey and giving us a behind-the-scenes look at the important work happening at Labcorp!
