Friday, May 1st was the 35th Annual Leadership Awards program on campus at University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Our Keynote Speaker was Samantha Way, UW-Platteville Alumni and the 2016 Dean Linden Award recipent. Samantha was also a part of the 2016 group of student leaders who started this scholarship.

Samantha Way and Kelly Jo Hadfield, Assistant Director of the Markee Pioneer Student Center at UW-Platteville, together presented the David M. Nevins Scholarship for Student Leaders at the event. We are pleased to announce the 2026-2027 scholarship recipient, Liz Reyes Arredondo. Liz has been an active member of University of Wisconsin Platteville Student Senate among many other clubs and organizations. Liz has also worked at the Information Center and as a Spanish Translator supporting families at New Student Experience. Congratulations, Liz!

When talking with Liz today about the award, she said, "This is after the guy who gave your the rooster!" David would be so proud that the rooster have continued to live on at the Markee.

It is a pleasure each year to announce the David M. Nevins Scholarship for Student Leaders at the UW-Platteville Leadership Awards. A $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a returning student who exemplifies the leadership potential and is an emerging student leader in fraternity and sorority life, student senate and/or Campus Programming and Relations.

Ashley Edwards is this year’s David M. Nevins scholarship winner. Ashley is a junior on campus and works as the Marketing Specialist for Campus Programming and Relations. In that role, she manages the CPR social media presence, coordinates promotional campaigns, and oversees strategies to engage students with campus programming. Ashley makes CPR a safe place for exploring new ideas, where team members support each other. She also is actively involved in the Women's Volleyball Club. She excels at lifting others up and creating opportunities for growth within her organizations, serving as a leader that everyone can depend on.

Ashley said in her materials, “Receiving the David M. Nevins Scholarship would allow me to continue to grow as a leader while furthering my impact on campus. I am passionate about creating experiences that bring people together and ensuring every student feels a sense of belonging. I strive to embody the leadership values that David M. Nevins championed.”

Congratulations, Ashley, for being recognized as an exceptional leader!

Scott Nevins, David and Sherry's son, was able to attend the awards ceremony to help celebrate the occasion.

Guess who's home!?!?!

After five weeks (11 of those days at rehab) Sherry is beyond excited to be home. A lot of progress made in that time. Scott messaged today to extend many more thank-you's for all the support from everyone.

Scott also says the shirt would have been exactly what David would have picked out.

8/20/24 - Sherry Nevins update

Big day today! Sherry officially is out of the ICU and is now at Bellin hospital at the in patient rehab. She is doing great and in good spirits.

As she settles in to her new (temporary) placement, they will know more for what she needs to focus on for her time in rehab. The family would like to continue to thank everyone for the ongoing support.

Scott continues to stay at the Altrusa House and Mark is between there and his home in SD.

If you plan to send cards (please continue!!) we have a new address.

Sherry update - 8/6/24

(pictured - Sherry with her brothers, Mark and Matt)

Sherry has maintained her status with things. Some days she is more alert and some days she is more tired. CT scans have been nothing alarming over the last several days, stents seem to be still working, and she has maintained her ability to hold small conversations. She is still in the window of time for the high risk of vasospasms happening. She is pretty persistent in convincing one of the guys to sneak her in a milk shake. 😉 Not quite there yet. We will celebrate when she gets her milk shake. Sherry will remain in the ICU for some time.

***UPDATE 8/6/24 8:30pm*** This just in, Sherry got her milk shake!! Yay!! Tonight's update is very positive. She was up to walk a bit today.

Many of you have asked about sending something or more details on how to support the family. Here is the information from Mark and Scott:

Still no flowers, balloons, etc. Cards are welcomed!! You can send cards to the hospital (see last post), but we also have an address to the house Mark and Scott are staying in. This address might be more streamlined and get to them faster.

Suggestions for family support.
1. Make a tax-deductible donation to the Altrusa House. This amazing facility has been homebase for Mark and Scott. Having the financial burden of lodging taken care of is a blessing. The Altrusa Hospitality House has not only provided them a place to stay, but also provides snacks, laundry facility, community kitchen, and more. You can note your donation is in honor of Sherry Nevins. https://www.greenbayaltrusahouse.org/financialcontribution

2. If gift cards are your thing, Kwik Trip or Hy-Vee most likely meet their needs.

3. Want to support quick and easy. Venmo - Sometimes they don't know what they need until they need it. Mark has asked me to collect the money on his behalf. They will use it for a donation the Altrusa House, food, gas, or a sudden need that comes up.

That is what we have for today.

Love to you all,

Sherry Update - 8/1/24

Sherry continues to be alert and able to have some small conversations, but will remain in the ICU for some time. They need to monitor the brain bleed and make sure that the stents continue working properly.

I learned a new word today: vasospasm, the tightening of an artery that lasts longer than the normal constriction. She is a high risk for vasospasm activity, the first 7-11 days being the most critical. Long road ahead, indeed, but day by day.

On to the good news:
PT got her up and over to a chair today. Mark Nevins (David's brother) and Laura got to stop in to see her.

Mark (Sherry's brother) and Scott have secured a room at the Altrusa House, a place offered to qualifying families of patients. This reduces the financial burden of housing, but it also gives the two of them a homebase with a community kitchen. Huge praise!!

Since Sherry is in the ICU, they can not accept flowers, balloons, plants, etc. Cards are good though! Here is the hospital address if you want to drop a note to her. Message me if you would like her home address. Friends are picking up the mail and tending to things at home.

Mark and I have been discussing how to respond to interest in financial contributions. Now that housing is taken care of, he and Scott are going to wait a few more days to decide any additional needs. We will update you with those needs as they arise.

Love to you all, Kelly Jo Hadfield

With permission from Scott Nevins and Mark Slattery, I write this note.

Dear Friends, family, colleagues, mentors/mentees of the Nevins family.

Saturday night (7/27/24), Sherry Nevins went to the ER in Rhinelander and then was airlifted to St. Vincent in Green Bay. A brain bleed was discovered and has since been operated on. She is now more stable, but things have been very critical. Scott (David and Sherry’s son) and Mark (Sherry’s brother) have been there, taking it one day at a time, by her side. Mark shared some remarkable news today. Breathing tests went well and intubation has been removed!! Sherry was able to speak a little and answered all questions correctly!! Her CT scans are showing that the stents are currently working. To quote Mark, “long ways to go, but we are so grateful for today.”

Through our conversations, it was agreed upon that David would want Sherry to have all the prayers and support she can get. David would rally all those prayers, positive comments, well wishes, and most definitely slide in his greatest dad joke between them all to lighten the mood.

It has been a tough road for the David & Sherry Nevins family in the last year. Scott is a genuine young man who takes after different aspects of his parents. Scotty, your parents and family are so proud of you and stand by your side.

I will compile all the well wishes left on this post and email them to Mark so that he can share with Sherry and Scott. Scott is occasionally on Facebook and may see some of the comments. We are going to wait a few more days to figure out if other gestures of support can be sent to hospital or home. I will update when I know.

Feel free to share and pass along.

Love to you all, Kelly Jo Hadfield

Happy Birthday, David!
