Our Berkshires were on the road to the Iowa State Fair with Justin in his Hokas, driving hard in the ring. We want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who purchased their pigs from Pioneer Farm Heidenreich Swine Center! We'd love to hear from all of you and would encourage you to add a picture of your project in the comments and let us know how you did and what you learned!

INTERNSHIP SPOTLIGHT! Keira Haldiman, an Animal Science major, is interning this summer at Northern Illinois Veterinary Services. “I did my internship at the Northern Illinois Veterinary Services in Stockton IL. At this internship I learned hands-on experience working with small and large animals. I assist veterinarians with cattle procedures, such as vaccinating, tagging, dehorning, Bull Soundness exams, restraining calves, etc. In the small animal portion I make appointments, check them in and out, answering phone calls, medications, and other clinic responsibilities."

INTERNSHIP SPOTLIGHT! Lindsey Montgomery, an Animal Science major, is interning this summer at Roskom Meats. “This summer I am interning at Roskom Meats located in Freedom, WI. I have gained hands-on experience in processing, packaging, food safety, and customer service. During my time, I have packaged many products including multiple flavors of snack sticks, brats, pork chops, sausage links, shredded beef and pork, bacon, wieners, gyro, liver, beef heart and tongue, and many more products that are available at Roskom Meats. I also spent time in the retail store, helping customers and taking out custom processing orders. Throughout the summer, I also had the chance to help on the slaughter floor and learned first-hand the many steps that processors take to ensure animals are humanely handled and the meat is processed safe for consumption. I am very grateful that I had this opportunity to learn more about the meat industry.”
